Overview
Druid levels in three stages, and each one plays like a different class. Levels 1-9 are spent as a caster, 10-19 in
Bear Form, and from level 20 onward you’re a cat. The build below goes Feral from the first point and never changes direction, so there’s no respec bill waiting for you halfway to 60.
What most guides skip is how much downtime the class cuts out once the kit comes together. You heal yourself between pulls,
Furor turns every shapeshift into a free burst of energy or rage, and
Feline Swiftness has you running 30% faster outdoors well before
Travel Form shows up at 30. A slow first ten levels, then one of the smoothest solo levelers in the game.
Talent Build
Hover over any talent to read its tooltip. Calculator not loading? Open the Druid talent calculator on Wowhead.
The final split is 14 Balance, 32 Feral and 5 Restoration. Here’s the order to take it in:
Key Choices:
Ferocity first: it makes
Maul and
Claw 5 rage or energy cheaper, and those are the two buttons you’ll press most from 10 to 30.
Feral Aggression is mostly the toll for reaching the third row. It pays off later, though: the 15% bonus on
Ferocious Bite matters once you learn it at 32.
Furor is the talent the whole leveling experience is built around. At 5/5 you get 10 rage every time you enter
Bear Form and 40 energy every time you enter
Cat Form, no chance roll involved.
Sharpened Claws and
Blood Frenzy work as a pair: 6% more crit in forms, and every crit from a combo-point ability adds an extra combo point. Finishers come noticeably faster.
Predatory Strikes adds attack power equal to 150% of your level in Cat and Bear Form. That’s 90 free attack power at 60 and the biggest damage talent in the build.
Heart of the Wild adds 20% Strength in
Cat Form, and
Leader of the Pack tops off the Feral tree with 3% crit for you and your party.- The last 14 points go into Balance, where
Natural Weapons adds 10% physical damage in forms and
Omen of Clarity hands out free abilities while you fight.
Want
Omen of Clarity earlier? You can move the Balance block to straight after
Leader of the Pack, so
Natural Weapons and Omen land in your late 40s. The order above keeps Feral first because that’s where the damage is while you’re still leveling.
Forms & Class Quests
Druid is the one class where skipping class quests leaves you without core abilities.
Bear Form,
Aquatic Form and
Cure Poison all come from quests, not the trainer. Here’s every unlock that changes how you level:
The Bear Form chain at 10 is the one that matters most. It’s quick, it teaches
Teleport: Moonglade along the way, and it turns your next ten levels from slow caster fights into something much smoother. Do it the moment you ding.
Aquatic Form is easy to put off, but it’s all in Moonglade and you’ll use it for every underwater quest and every swim between zones for the rest of the game.
Rotation
Levels 1-9 (caster): pull with
Wrath, add
Moonfire as the target closes in, then melee it down to save mana. Heal with
Rejuvenation and
Healing Touch between pulls, not during them.
Bear Form (10-19)
OPENER
- 1.
pull from range while you still have the mana for it.
- 2.
a second hit before the target reaches you.
- 3.
shift as it arrives. Once you have Furor, this also hands you 10 rage straight away.
PRIORITY
- 1.
from level 12, use it at the start of the fight for 20 extra rage.
- 2.
on anything that hits hard, or whenever two mobs are on you.
- 3.
your rage dump. Keep it queued whenever you have the rage.
- 4.
from level 14, stop casters and healers mid-cast.
Cat Form (20-60)
OPENER
- 1.
walk up unseen, and skip the mobs you don’t need on the way.
- 2.
from level 32, open from behind for a big first hit. Before that, open with Claw.
- 3.
from level 36, lowers the target’s armor and doesn’t cost energy.
PRIORITY
- 1.
your combo-point builder. Use Shred instead when you’re behind the target.
- 2.
at 3-5 combo points on anything that will live through it, and your main finisher before level 32.
- 3.
from level 32, your main finisher at 5 combo points.
- 4.
powershift: when you’re low on energy, drop out of Cat Form and shift straight back in for 40 energy from Furor.
Shifting into
Cat Form resets your energy before
Furor adds its 40, so only powershift when you’re down to about 20 energy or less. Shifting costs mana too, which is why
Natural Shapeshifter closes out the build.
AOE
When more than one mob is on you, go
Bear Form.
Demoralizing Roar takes the edge off every attacker, and
Swipe hits up to three targets at once. Cat Form has no real answer to multiple enemies while leveling, so don’t try to out-damage a group in it.
If a pull goes wrong,
Frenzied Regeneration (36) turns your rage into health, and you can always shift out to cast
Entangling Roots on one mob while you deal with the other.
Gear & Stats
In
Cat Form, Strength gives 2 attack power and Agility gives 1 attack power plus crit and armor. Both are good. Stamina keeps you alive, and Intellect only matters for how often you can shift and heal.
While leveling that means grabbing anything “of the Monkey” (Agility and Stamina), “of the Tiger” (Strength and Agility) or “of the Bear” (Strength and Stamina). Druids wear leather, and for weapons you can use staves, maces, daggers and fist weapons. Pick them for their stats, since their damage does nothing in form.
At level 40,
Wolfshead Helm is the one piece worth going out of your way for. It gives 20 extra energy when you shift into Cat Form and 5 rage when you shift into Bear Form, which stacks on top of
Furor. Tribal Leatherworkers craft it at skill 225, so you can make it yourself or buy it.
Race Choice
In Classic, Druid is only available to two races: Night Elf for Alliance and Tauren for Horde.
Tauren has the stronger leveling kit.
Endurance gives 5% more health, and
War Stomp is a two-second stun on up to five enemies when a pull goes wrong. Night Elf gets
Quickness for 1% dodge and
Shadowmeld, which a class with
Prowl rarely needs. Neither is a wrong choice, so pick the faction you want to play.
Professions
- 1
- Skinning and Leatherworking
the natural fit for a leather wearer. You skin what you kill anyway, and Tribal Leatherworking gets you your own
Wolfshead Helm at 40.
- 2
- Herbalism and Skinning
two gathering professions for the most gold while you level, which helps with the mount at 40.
- 3
- Herbalism and Alchemy
keeps you stocked on healing and mana potions, which makes the tougher quests and dungeons easier.
Tips & Tricks
Top yourself up before you shift back. A
Rejuvenation ticking while you run to the next pull saves you from sitting down to eat, and you’re out of form anyway.
Keep
Mark of the Wild and
Thorns on yourself at all times. Thorns does free damage to everything that hits you in melee, which is most mobs while leveling.
Shapeshifting breaks roots and snares. If something slows you while you run, shift and keep going.
Skip
Tiger’s Fury while leveling. 30 energy for 10 extra damage per hit over 6 seconds is almost always worse than spending that energy on
Claw.
Use
Prowl to walk past mobs you don’t need, and
Dash (26) to get away when a pull goes wrong.
Teleport: Moonglade gets you to every class quest in Moonglade without touching your hearthstone, so it stays set to wherever you’re questing.
