Overview
Dungeons are some of the best XP and gear in Classic — often better than questing on a per-hour basis with a good group, and a source of upgrades you simply won’t find from quest rewards at the same level. This guide breaks down every Classic dungeon by level range, plus which ones are actually worth prioritizing if you’re leveling through them intentionally rather than just visiting once for a quest chain.
Unlike questing, dungeon leveling scales with your group’s coordination as much as your character’s level. A well-run group can clear content two or three levels above what a solo player could safely handle, while a disorganized group will struggle even in a dungeon everyone’s technically overleveled for. Keep that in mind as you read the level ranges below — they’re a starting point, not a hard rule.
This guide pairs directly with our general Leveling Guide — use that one for your zone-by-zone questing route, and this one for deciding when to detour into a dungeon along the way.
Full Dungeon List by Level
Scarlet Monastery has four separate wings with their own level ranges (Graveyard, Library, Armory, Cathedral) — treat it as four distinct dungeons rather than one stop.
If you’re leveling primarily through dungeons rather than questing, here’s the general pattern experienced players follow:
- 1
- Levels 42-47
Spam Uldaman (Alliance-favored) or Razorfen Downs (Horde-favored) — both are tougher than Scarlet Monastery but worth it for the loot and XP density.
- 2
- Levels 44-52
Once you outgrow Uldaman, move to Zul’Farrak — it’s considered one of the best solo and group grinding spots in the game, with Mages and Hunters especially known for farming the graveyard area.
- 3
- Levels 46-52
Maraudon and Temple of Atal’Hakkar are both solid alternatives to Zul’Farrak with strong loot, though their end bosses are tougher.
- 4
- Levels 52-55
Blackrock Depths becomes the go-to — it’s large enough to reset quickly and spam efficiently, especially the Detention Block area.
- 5
- Levels 55-60
Continue spamming Blackrock Depths, or transition into the level 55-60 dungeon cluster (Dire Maul, Scholomance, Stratholme) depending on your group’s gear and attunement progress.
Faction Notes
Several dungeons are meaningfully easier or more convenient for one faction over the other, even when technically open to both:
- Alliance-favored: The Deadmines, Gnomeregan, Uldaman — all closer to Alliance leveling zones and quest hubs.
- Horde-favored: Wailing Caverns, Razorfen Kraul, Razorfen Downs — closer to Horde territory and quest chains.
- Faction-exclusive: Ragefire Chasm (Horde only, in Orgrimmar) and The Stockade (Alliance only, in Stormwind) are both city dungeons tied to their respective capital.
Both factions can technically run any non-exclusive dungeon — these notes just reflect which ones fit naturally into each faction’s leveling path without a detour.
Tips & Tricks
Watch for attunement quests: Later dungeons often gate deeper areas behind a quest chain — the key to unlock Blackrock Depths’ Shadowforge Doors, or the multi-step chain required for Scholomance, are both worth starting early rather than discovering mid-run.
Don’t sleep on the Scarlet Monastery wings: Each of the four wings can be run somewhat independently, making SM a flexible stop across a wide level range rather than a single one-and-done dungeon.
Group composition matters more than gear at this stage: A well-coordinated group of underleveled players will clear a dungeon faster than a mismatched group that’s overleveled but disorganized. Prioritize finding a tank and healer who know the dungeon over waiting for the “perfect” level range.
Check our class guides once you’re 60: Dungeon leveling teaches you your class’s basic rotation, but the endgame raid rotation is a different, more optimized animal — our class guides cover the level 60 version once you get there.
