Overview
Leveling 1-60 in Classic is a real time investment — often 100+ hours depending on your class, your play style, and how much you’re grouping versus soloing. This guide gets you through it efficiently by pointing you at the right zone for your level range instead of wandering into content that’s too easy, too hard, or just picked over by every other player doing the same quests. It’s written to be class-agnostic — the zones and pacing here work regardless of what you’re leveling, though your specific class will have its own quirks worth knowing about separately.
Some zones are contested between factions and see regular world PvP — Stranglethorn Vale especially. If you’re on a PvP realm, expect to occasionally lose progress to a gank, and plan your questing time accordingly.
Starting Zones
Each starting zone is self-contained and built for levels 1-10 — finish everything available there before moving on, since these quests are dense, close together, and give solid early XP.
Leveling Route (10-60)
This route prioritizes efficiency over completeness. You’ll outlevel some zones before finishing every quest in them, and that’s fine — better to move on to appropriately-leveled content than fully clear a zone your character has outgrown.
Dungeon Stops
Dungeons break up the questing grind, often give better gear than what you’d otherwise have at that level, and are worth detouring for even if you’re not actively “leveling through” them. Some players run a given dungeon two or three times across a level range for gear alone — there’s no penalty for revisiting one you’ve technically outleveled slightly if the loot is still an upgrade.
Later dungeons (Razorfen Kraul, Uldaman, Zul’Farrak, Maraudon, and beyond) continue this pattern through the 30s and 40s — worth running for gear even outside of a dedicated dungeon-leveling strategy. A full dungeon leveling guide with every stop from 15 to 60 is a genuinely deep enough topic to deserve its own separate article.
Leveling Faster
Once you’ve got the zone route down, these are the actual levers that meaningfully speed up the grind — some free, some requiring a bit of setup time that pays for itself quickly.
- 1
- Rested Experience
log out in an inn or major city whenever you’re done playing for the session. Rested XP doubles your experience gain from kills until it runs out, and it’s completely free.
- 2
- Gathering Professions
gold to fund your leveling, and Skinning specifically ties directly into kills you’re already making.
- 3
- Group Play
grouping for difficult quests and dungeons speeds up otherwise slow solo content, especially elite quests that are impractical alone.
- 4
- Addons
a quest-tracking addon that shows objective locations saves real time over manually reading quest text and guessing where to go.
Tips & Tricks
Don’t fully clear every zone: You’ll level out of a zone’s usefulness before exhausting its quest list. Move on once quests start feeling low-value for your level, rather than mopping up everything out of habit.
Watch for breadcrumb quests: Some quest chains send you to a completely different zone partway through. Don’t assume a quest chain stays in the zone where it started.
Take death seriously in contested zones: Stranglethorn Vale and similar areas see real, frequent world PvP on PvP realms. Travel with some awareness of your surroundings rather than questing on autopilot.
Pick up a gathering profession early: Waiting until 60 to start Herbalism, Mining, or Skinning means missing out on tens of levels’ worth of node and skin availability you’ll never get to revisit efficiently.
