Overview
Holy Paladin is the backbone of raid healing in Classic — unmatched single-target throughput, exceptional mana efficiency thanks to Illumination, and raid-defining utility through Blessings. Every raid wants two or three of these, and for good reason.
Illumination is what separates Holy Paladin from every other healer: your healing crits refund the full mana cost of the spell. This makes Critical Strike a genuine mana-efficiency stat for you, not just a throughput stat.
Strengths & Weaknesses
- Best single-target healing throughput in the game
- Exceptional mana efficiency via Illumination
- Plate armor gives real survivability compared to other healers
- Powerful raid-wide utility through Blessings and Auras
- Always in demand — healers are never short of a raid spot
- Weak at raid-wide, spread-out AoE healing compared to Priest or Druid
- Needs to be paired with other healers for full raid coverage on big damage fights
- Mana management is a real, constant concern despite Illumination
- Limited to single-target focus — you can’t easily triage a room full of damaged players
Talents
The standard raid build is 35/11/5 (Holy/Protection/Retribution) — 31 points into Holy for Holy Shock and Illumination, with the remaining 11 for Blessing of Kings in Protection, and 5 into Improved Blessing of Might.

Key Choices:
- Holy Shock — your only instant-cast heal, and worth reaching even if it means trimming points elsewhere.
- Improved Concentration Aura — worth taking if your raid group has heavy pushback concerns (lots of casters or consistent incoming damage); a second common variant of this build shifts points here instead of deeper Holy investment.
- Blessing of Kings (Protection) — essentially mandatory; unlocking Greater Blessing of Kings for the raid is a huge part of your value.
Stat Priority
- 1
- Healing Power
the only stat that directly increases your healing output. Prioritize gear and enchants with Healing Power over raw Spell Power whenever available.
- 2
- Intellect
expands your mana pool and boosts crit chance, which matters a lot given Illumination.
- 3
- Critical Strike
your mana-efficiency stat thanks to Illumination refunding the full cost of critical heals.
- 4
- MP5
steady regeneration even while casting, but don’t purposefully stack it — most of your mana return comes from Illumination procs instead.
Spirit is functionally useless for Holy Paladin. You have no talent that lets you regenerate mana in combat from Spirit, so don’t chase it on gear the way other healers do.
Rotation
OPENER
- 1.
Blessing of Kings
Blessing of Wisdom
Blessing of Mightapply the correct Blessing to your assigned targets before the pull.
- 2.
Seal of Wisdom
Judgementhelps the raid’s mana-users sustain.
PRIORITY
- 1.
Respect spell ranks
using a lower-rank Flash of Light or Holy Light saves real mana without sacrificing much healing when full throughput isn’t needed.
- 2.
Flash of Lightyour bread-and-butter fast heal for keeping a tank topped under steady damage.
- 3.
Holy Lightyour big, mana-heavier heal for real damage spikes.
- 4.
Holy Shockuse on cooldown both for emergency burst healing and as mana-efficient damage against Undead targets when healing isn’t urgently needed.
For AOE Fights
Holy Paladin has no true raid-wide AoE heal in Classic — your value in group-damage situations comes from Blessing and Aura coverage rather than a spammable group heal.
- Make sure Blessing of Sanctuary or the appropriate Blessing is active on your assigned tank before a heavy AoE phase.
- Prioritize whichever tank or player is taking the biggest hits — you’re a single-target specialist even during raid-wide damage.
- Lean on Holy Shock’s low cast time to react quickly to sudden spikes.

Tips & Tricks
Downrank aggressively: A lower-rank heal that lands in time beats a higher-rank heal that overshoots the damage taken. Mana efficiency wins fights.
Coordinate Blessings with other Paladins: Don’t let Greater Blessings overlap wastefully on the same targets — communicate who’s covering what.
Lean on Illumination: Since crits refund your mana, don’t be afraid to use your higher-throughput heals when you can afford to — the mana often comes back.
You’re not a raid-wide healer: Don’t try to spread yourself thin across a damaged raid. Focus your assignment and trust your co-healers to cover the rest.
