On October 7, Blizzard announced that Skyborne will get Standard-Definition (SD) player models, including SD Druid forms, in early 2027 — after World of Warcraft: Forever launches on November 4. In the meantime, Blizzard has revised the existing High-Definition (HD) Skyborne Druid forms, reducing their softness, adding more detailed fur textures, and adjusting their color saturation.
What Blizzard Announced
Blizzard shared the changes in a post titled “The Future of Skyborne Visual Updates,” along with an early work-in-progress image of the SD models. It said it will share more closer to release.
Why Blizzard Is Making the Change
The post frames this as a consistency fix. Blizzard says its aim has always been to uphold the original WoW-era look while giving players more choice, and that some visual ideas it explored along the way didn’t meet the consistency and cohesion it wants. On the Druid forms specifically, the team says the Skyborne come from an exotic environment and their forms should reflect that, without clashing with the visual language of other creatures in the world.
On the player models, Blizzard acknowledged feedback that the HD Skyborne look “jarring by contrast” next to the SD models and world, and said it agrees.
How the SD and HD Toggle Works
Forever already lets players choose between SD and HD models for the original races. Blizzard says it built that choice around the pre-existing races first, because many players are attached to those models. Skyborne were the exception: they currently have HD models only, and that stays true at launch, since the SD versions arrive afterward. The October 1 development notes also mention character creation showing matching icons when SD models are toggled.
What It Means for Skyborne Players
At launch, Skyborne use HD models. With SD arriving in early 2027, expect the HD look until then.
An SD option is on the way. Blizzard describes it as added choice for players who prefer the SD look, but hasn’t said how it will work for existing Skyborne characters.
Don’t expect a firm date yet. “Early 2027” is the only timing Blizzard has given.
What We Still Don’t Know
Blizzard hasn’t given a date within early 2027, hasn’t said when the revised HD Druid forms will be in the game, and hasn’t detailed how the SD option will apply to existing Skyborne characters. We’ll update this page as more is shared.
