Patch WoW Classic

Overview

A bear tank in Classic is a wall of armor and health with very strong single-target threat. Dire Bear Form multiplies the armor on your gear, Heart of the Wild turns every point of Stamina into more health than any other tank gets, and Maul is one of the best threat abilities in the game.

What most guides skip is what you don’t have. No shield, no parry, no emergency cooldowns, and no way to push crushing blows off the table. That makes you a great off-tank and a strong main tank on the right fights, and it’s why you build around raw health and armor instead of chasing the defense numbers warriors talk about.

GOOD TO KNOW

In bear forms your weapon’s damage doesn’t count, same as in Cat Form. Your attacks scale with attack power, so a weapon is only as good as the Stamina, Agility and armor on it.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Bears trade avoidance and cooldowns for health, armor and threat. Know both sides before you volunteer for a main tank spot.

STRENGHTS
  • Huge armor and health pool. Dire Bear Form multiplies your item armor, and Agility adds armor on top.
  • Strong single-target threat: Feral Instinct adds 15% threat in bear forms, and Maul hits hard every swing.
  • You can’t be disarmed, and you bring Innervate, Rebirth and Leader of the Pack while you tank.
  • Flexible. Between pulls or on an off-tank assignment you can drop into Cat Form and do damage.
WEAKNESSES
  • No block and no parry, so dodge is your only avoidance and crushing blows stay on the table.
  • No defensive cooldowns like a warrior’s Shield Wall or Last Stand. When it goes wrong, your healers carry you.
  • Weaker multi-target threat than a warrior. Swipe only hits three targets.
  • Fear mechanics hurt. You can’t stance-dance out of them, and shifting to break effects costs you all your rage.

Talents

Hover over any talent to read its tooltip. Calculator not loading? Open the Druid talent calculator on Wowhead.

This build is 11 Balance, 35 Feral and 5 Restoration. It takes every Feral talent that adds armor, threat or rage, skips the cat-only ones, and finishes in Balance for Natural Weapons and Omen of Clarity.

Key Choices:

  • Thick Hide adds 10% to the armor from your items, which Dire Bear Form then multiplies. It’s the core mitigation talent.
  • Feral Instinct gives 15% more threat in bear forms. Pure tanks never skip it.
  • Ferocity makes Maul and Swipe 5 rage cheaper, and Savage Fury adds 20% to their damage. Your two main buttons get cheaper and hit harder.
  • Sharpened Claws adds 6% crit in forms, and Primal Fury gives 5 rage on every crit in bear forms. Together they keep you in rage when the boss misses or you’re taking little damage.
  • Heart of the Wild adds 20% Stamina in bear forms, and Predatory Strikes adds attack power equal to 150% of your level.
  • Feral Aggression is left out. Its main bonus is to Ferocious Bite, which a tank never uses.
  • Brutal Impact adds a second to Bash‘s stun, which helps when an add is casting something you can’t let through.
  • Furor gives 10 rage every time you enter a bear form, so a shift to break a root or a fear doesn’t leave you empty.
NOTE

Splitting your time between cat and bear as an off-tank? The 14/32/5 build from our Feral DPS guide with 5/5 Feral Instinct covers both jobs. Main tanks should keep this one.

Stat Priority

Bosses can crit you, and you can’t push crits off the table the way a warrior does with defense. So your answer is a deep health pool and as much armor as you can wear.

  • 1
  • Armor
  • your main physical mitigation, and the stat where druids lead every other tank thanks to the Dire Bear Form multiplier.

  • 2
  • Stamina
  • each point gives 12 health instead of 10 because of Heart of the Wild. When a crit or a crushing blow lands, health is what keeps you up.

  • 3
  • Agility
  • dodge, crit and 2 armor per point in bear form. Dodge is your only avoidance, since druids can’t parry.

  • 4
  • Hit (to 9%)
  • bosses are three levels higher, and 9% hit stops your Maul from missing. A missed Maul is a gap in your threat.

  • 5
  • Defense
  • a little more dodge and a little less chance to be crit, per point. Take it when it comes on good pieces, but don’t build around a cap you can’t reach.

NOTE

Strength and attack power are threat stats, not survival stats. Pick them up once you’re comfortable with your health and armor, or swap into them on fights where threat is the problem.

Rotation

Bear threat is built on one rule: keep Maul queued on every swing. It replaces your next auto-attack, so it’s never wasted, and it carries extra threat on top of its damage. Everything else fills around it.

OPENER

  • 1.
  • Faerie Fire (Feral)

  • pull with it. It’s instant, costs no rage and starts your threat from range.

  • 2.
  • Feral Charge

  • close the gap and interrupt anything that’s casting. Use it to grab adds too.

  • 3.
  • Maul

  • queue it from the first swing and keep it queued.

PRIORITY

  • 1.
  • Maul

  • queued every swing, always. This is your main threat source.

  • 2.
  • Swipe

  • your rage dump when Maul is already queued and you’re sitting on extra rage.

  • 4.
  • Growl

  • taunt back anything that gets loose. It has a cooldown, so don’t waste it on a mob you can recover with Maul.

  • 5.
  • Frenzied Regeneration

  • turns rage into health when healers fall behind. Use it before you’re in trouble, not after.

AOE

  • 1.
  • Swipe

  • hits up to three targets. Tab between targets and Maul the one with the least threat.

  • 3.
  • Challenging Roar

  • forces everything nearby to attack you for a short time. Save it for when a pack breaks loose onto healers.

NOTE

Shifting out and back in to break a fear or snare costs you your rage. Furor gives you 10 back and a Wolfshead Helm adds 5 more, which is why many bears keep the helm in their bags for those fights.

Consumables

A tank’s consumables are about staying alive on the hardest fights. Health and armor come first, and the Agility elixir doubles as threat.

  • Flask
  • Flask of the Titans

  • a big chunk of extra health for two hours. The tank flask for progression bosses.

Gear

Tanking gear for a bear is mostly the same leather a cat wears, plus every Stamina and armor piece you can find. Druids don’t compete with warriors for plate tank tier, and from the Ahn’Qiraj raids onward many pieces are top choices for both bear and cat. Weapon damage doesn’t matter in form, so judge weapons by Stamina, Agility and armor only.

  • Weapon
  • a staff or two-hander with Stamina and Agility

  • stats only. A higher-DPS weapon with nothing on it does nothing for you in form.

  • Head
  • the best Stamina helm you have

  • keep a Wolfshead Helm for fights where you shift a lot.

  • Trinkets
  • anything with armor, dodge or Stamina

  • you have no cooldowns of your own, so an on-use armor or health trinket fills that gap.

  • Rest of the set
  • leather with Stamina, Agility and armor

  • high-armor leather is worth more to you than to anyone else in the raid.

Tips & Tricks

Talk to your healers before the pull. You have no Shield Wall, so they need to know when the big hits are coming.

Don’t shift to cast Rebirth or Innervate while you hold a boss. Let someone else cover it unless the raid lead calls for you.

Get to 9% hit before you add threat stats. A missed Maul costs more threat than any amount of Strength gains you.

Swipe only hits three targets, so on bigger packs let a warrior or crowd control take the extras.

Keep a Feral DPS set in your bags. On fights where you’re not needed as a tank, Cat Form does far more for the raid than standing in bear.
