Patch WoW Classic

Overview

Let’s be honest up front: Balance is the weakest raid DPS spec in Classic Era. Mages and warlocks do more damage and don’t run out of mana doing it. Most raids want their druids healing, and a Moonkin spot is something you earn with preparation, not something a raid hands out.

What Balance does bring is Moonkin Form‘s 3% spell crit aura for every caster in your party, plus Innervate, Rebirth and Faerie Fire. Put a Moonkin in a group of mages or warlocks and the aura carries a lot of its own weight. If you love the spec and you’re willing to bring a bag of mana consumables to every raid, it’s playable. Just go in knowing that’s the deal.

GOOD TO KNOW

The Balance rotation is mostly Starfire from start to finish. The skill in the spec isn’t the button order, it’s making your mana last until the boss dies.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Moonkin is a support caster that does damage, not a damage caster that supports. Judge it on that.

STRENGHTS
  • Moonkin Form gives every party member within range 3% spell crit. That’s a big deal in a caster group.
  • Innervate and Rebirth on top of your damage, plus Faerie Fire for the physical damage dealers.
  • A simple rotation that leaves you room to watch the fight, decurse and call things out.
  • Hurricane gives you burst AOE on big trash packs.
WEAKNESSES
  • Low damage compared to mages and warlocks, even fully geared.
  • Mana is the whole fight. Max-rank Starfire spam runs you dry fast, and you need potions and runes every raid.
  • No talent gives spell hit, so all 16% has to come from gear.
  • Moonkin Form limits you to Balance spells, so healing in an emergency means shifting out.

Talents

Hover over any talent to read its tooltip. Calculator not loading? Open the Druid talent calculator on Wowhead.

The standard raid build is 37 Balance, 0 Feral and 14 Restoration. You go all the way down Balance for Moonkin Form, then into Restoration for Reflection so some of your mana regeneration keeps going while you cast.

Key Choices:

  • Moonkin Form is the reason you’re here: 3% spell crit for your party, and 360% more armor from items while you’re in it.
  • Vengeance raises the crit damage bonus of Starfire, Moonfire and Wrath by 100%, so your crits hit for double instead of one and a half times.
  • Improved Starfire takes 0.5 seconds off Starfire’s cast time, and Nature’s Grace takes another 0.5 off your next cast after any spell crit.
  • Moonfury adds 10% damage to Starfire, Moonfire and Wrath. Moonglow cuts their mana cost by 9%, which helps more than it sounds.
  • Reflection lets 15% of your mana regeneration continue while casting. On a long fight that’s the difference between finishing with max-rank Starfire and finishing with nothing.
  • Insect Swarm is optional. It’s a Nature-damage DoT that also lowers the target’s chance to hit, and it needs room on the boss’s debuff list.
NOTE

Asked to keep Thorns on the tank? The usual swap is to take 3 points out of Nature’s Focus and put them into Improved Thorns.

Stat Priority

Casters live and die by hit, and Balance has no talent to help. Fill hit before you chase anything else.

  • 1
  • Spell Hit (to 16%)
  • the cap against raid bosses. It’s hard to reach on caster leather, so expect to sit below it for a while and take every hit piece you can.

  • 2
  • Spell Damage
  • flat damage on every cast. Arcane Damage counts too, since Starfire and Moonfire are Arcane. Skip Nature Damage pieces.

  • 4
  • Intellect
  • 15 mana per point and a little crit. Your best primary stat for making it to the end of a fight.

  • 5
  • Spirit and MP5
  • only useful because of Reflection. Fine as filler, and worth more on long fights.

NOTE

Every point of spell damage on gear also needs mana to turn into damage. Two pieces with the same damage aren’t equal if one of them has Intellect on it.

Rotation

Your rotation is Starfire, over and over. Starfire is your most mana-efficient damage spell, and it’s Arcane, so it doesn’t care about Nature resistance. Everything else is situational.

Wrath and Insect Swarm are Nature damage. Save Wrath for movement-heavy fights and for targets that are weak to Nature, and skip Nature spells altogether on anything that shrugs them off. Max-rank Starfire is rank 7. When you won’t last the fight at max rank, keep ranks 5 and 6 on your bars and drop down before you go out of mana, not after.

OPENER

  • 2.
  • Faerie Fire

  • if your raid wants it on the boss and no other druid has it covered.

  • 3.
  • Starfire

  • start casting the moment the tank has threat.

PRIORITY

  • 1.
  • Starfire

  • your main spell from start to finish. Downrank it when your mana won’t last the fight.

  • 2.
  • Moonfire

  • while you’re moving, or to keep it ticking if your raid has debuff room and your mana is healthy. Don’t spam it.

  • 3.
  • Insect Swarm

  • only with spare mana and debuff room, and only if the boss doesn’t resist Nature.

  • 4.
  • Innervate

  • on yourself if your healers are fine, otherwise on whoever your raid leader calls.

AOE

  • 1.
  • Hurricane

  • a 10-second channel on a one-minute cooldown. It pulls a lot of threat, so wait until the tanks are settled.

  • 2.
  • Moonfire

  • on high-health packs, spread it across targets before Hurricane.

NOTE

Moonkin Form only lets you cast Balance spells. If you need to throw a heal, shift out, heal, and shift back in. Natural Shapeshifter in this build makes that shift cheaper.

Consumables

Moonkins have a reputation for running out of mana, and the fix is consumables. If you aren’t willing to bring these, you’re better off healing.

  • Potion
  • Major Mana Potion

  • about 1,800 mana every two minutes. Keep it on cooldown on long fights.

  • Rune
  • Demonic Rune

  • mana for health on its own two-minute cooldown, so you can use it alongside potions. Dark Rune works the same way.

  • Potion
  • Mageblood Potion

  • mana every 5 seconds for an hour, active while you cast.

Gear

Balance shares most of its gear with other casters, which means you’re usually last in line for it. Leather with spell damage and hit is rare, so don’t be afraid of cloth, rings and trinkets that other casters pass on. Leatherworking’s Ironfeather set gives spell power as a two-piece bonus and is worth crafting early.

  • Hit pieces
  • anything with spell hit

  • take it over raw spell damage until you’re much closer to 16%.

  • Weapon
  • a staff or main hand with spell damage

  • enchant it with spell power. Intellect on the weapon is a nice extra.

  • Crafted set
  • Leatherworking’s Ironfeather set

  • 20 spell power from the two-piece bonus, and it’s yours as soon as you can craft or buy it.

  • Rings and trinkets
  • spell damage, hit or Intellect

  • shared caster slots where you’ll often get what the mages pass on.

Tips & Tricks

Join a party with as many casters as you can. Your crit aura only reaches your own party, and it’s wasted on warriors.

Keep Gift of the Wild or Mark of the Wild up on the raid and decurse with Remove Curse when needed. It’s part of why you’re there.

Watch your mana at the halfway point of every fight, not at the end. Drop to a lower Starfire rank early and you’ll keep casting until the boss dies.

Save Rebirth for the targets your raid leader calls. Spending it on a DPS when the tank dies two minutes later is the classic Moonkin mistake.

Hurricane pulls threat fast. Let the tanks settle on a pack before you start the channel.
