Overview
Zul’Farrak is a sprawling Sandfury troll city in northwestern Tanaris, and one of the best leveling dungeons in the entire game for the 43-48 range. It’s also one of the longest — a circuit through an open plaza, a pyramid, and a flooded temple, with seven real bosses plus an optional eighth waiting behind its own separate acquisition chain.
Technically a level 39 dungeon, but realistically not comfortable to complete before level 44. Don’t judge the difficulty by the entry level number alone.
Boss Quick Reference
Critical Mechanics
Antu’sul — the instant pull
Unlike most bosses, Antu’sul aggroes the moment anyone in your group gets near his cave, well before you’re actually in range to do anything about it. He also spawns adds immediately on pull and continues summoning more (Servant of Antu’sul, level 48 elite basilisks) throughout the fight — and these don’t despawn when he dies. Make sure your whole group is ready before anyone gets close, and plan to keep the adds under control rather than ignoring them; groups regularly kill Antu’sul and then wipe to the leftover adds anyway.
The Pyramid Event — Sergeant Bly
Climbing the pyramid to free a group of captured adventurers triggers a troll wave event. Do not push too far down the pyramid before you’re ready — doing so can aggro 50 or more mobs at once. If things go wrong, there’s a safe spot behind the prisoner cages near the top where the pursuing wave eventually despawns. Once the event resolves, talk to Weegli Blastfuse (the goblin in Bly’s group) to open the door toward Chief Ukorz. You can optionally speak to Bly himself for the
Divino-matic Rod quest item, which will aggro him and any remaining party members — or simply wait, since they’ll often Hearthstone away if left alone.
Notable Loot
Sang’thraze the Deflector and Jang’thraze the Protector aren’t just two separate drops — combine them and they become
Sul’thraze the Lasher, one of Classic’s more famous weapons. Both halves need to actually drop before the combination is possible, so don’t vendor either one assuming it’s just a placeholder item.
Quests
Zul’Farrak carries an unusually large quest list for a single dungeon — enough that we’ve given it a full dedicated breakdown rather than trying to fit everything here. Expect quests spanning both factions, several multi step chains, and rewards ranging from gear sets to gold. See our complete Zul’Farrak Quests Guide for the full walkthrough.
Tips & Tricks
Bring real crowd control. Between Antu’sul’s adds and the Pyramid Event’s troll wave, this dungeon punishes groups without a way to manage multiple enemies at once.
Decide on Gahz’rilla before you start, not partway through. If you want
Carrot on a Stick, you’ll need the
Mallet of Zul’Farrak in hand before you enter, and you’ll need to loot
Gahz’rilla’s Electrified Scale from the kill and turn in the
Gahz’rilla quest afterward — the trinket doesn’t drop directly off the boss.
Don’t skip the safe spot at the pyramid if things go wrong. Panicking and running blindly during the troll wave usually makes things worse than retreating to the known safe area behind the cages.
Loot everything, even if it looks like junk. Between the Sul’thraze halves and the sheer number of quest items scattered through this dungeon, more drops matter here than in most Classic instances.
