Patch WoW Forever

Overview

Priest gets one of the more substantial reworks in Forever. Discipline, Holy, and Shadow all keep their roles, and the Priest remains Classic’s most versatile healer, but the class gains wider access to important tools: Fear Ward and Devouring Plague open up to every race, Shadow Word: Death joins the baseline kit, and each tree gains signature talents, several of them borrowed from later WoW expansions and introduced to Classic Era here for the first time.

What Changed From Classic

Change Details
Fear Ward and Devouring Plague Available to all Priests at level 20, regardless of race
Divine Spirit Now baseline for every Priest, learned at level 30, instead of a Discipline talent
Shadow Word: Death Added as a baseline ability at level 32. Deals instant Shadow damage, but if the target survives, you take damage equal to 10% of your maximum health. 15-second cooldown
Prayer of Healing Heals all members of the target’s party and their pets, instead of the Priest’s own party
Renew Can be active from multiple Priests on the same target
Fade Threat reduction doubled
Racial spells Reevaluated for every race, with new or reworked spells for Gnome, Dwarf, Human, Night Elf, and Undead Priests. Troll Priests are unchanged
NOTE

Discipline changed the most of any Priest tree — roughly 7 new talents, 10 changed, 4 removed. This is the specialization most worth relearning from scratch if you played Priest in Classic.

Talent Trees

Structure stays Classic minded: three trees and 51 points at level 60, now with a new 16 point gold medal tier. Each tree gains one gold talent at 16 points: Soul Warding in Discipline, Binding Heal in Holy, and Vampiric Embrace in Shadow. Penance sits deeper in Discipline at 21 points, and Prayer of Mending caps Holy at 31. Several Classic talents are gone or merged into others, including Unbreakable Will, Force of Will, Improved Prayer of Healing, Lightwell, and Improved Vampiric Embrace, while Divine Spirit and Improved Power Word: Fortitude are now baseline abilities.

New and Changed Talents

Tree Notable Talents
Discipline Power in Light (new), Twin Disciplines (new), Holy Precision, Soul Warding (new, 16-point), Renewed Hope (new), Penance (new, 21-point), Divine Aegis (new)
Holy Binding Heal (new, 16-point), Litany of Light, Prayer of Mending (new, 31-point)
Shadow Vampiric Embrace (now 16-point), Devouring Contagion (new), Early Demise (new), Shadowform (reworked)

Divine Aegis is a real standout: your critical heals create an absorb shield on the target for 12 seconds, based on a percentage of the amount healed. The effect doesn’t stack, and it rewards getting crits on your heals, not just raw throughput.

Holy Precision increases your chance to hit with Holy spells by up to 18%. Blizzard added it specifically so healing Priests don’t need to chase hit chance on their gear. Shadowform, meanwhile, now lets you cast all non-healing spells while in it, cuts the Mana cost of all Shadow spells by 50%, and increases their critical strike damage bonus by 100%, in exchange for a reduced Shadow damage bonus.

New and Changed Abilities

Penance, Prayer of Mending, and Binding Heal are the headline additions, and none of them are Forever inventions — all three are well-known spells from later WoW expansions, brought into Classic Era for the first time here. All three arrive as talents. Penance is a 2-second channel on a 12-second cooldown that damages an enemy or heals an ally every second. Prayer of Mending requires Spirit of Redemption: on a 10-second cooldown, it heals its target the next time they take damage or receive non-periodic healing, then jumps to another party or raid member within 20 yards, healing up to 5 times in total, with only one active on each target. Binding Heal is a 1.5-second cast with no cooldown that heals you and your current target, tuned to be roughly as good as a single-target direct heal even when you need no healing yourself.

On the Shadow side, Early Demise raises Shadow Word: Death‘s critical strike chance against targets below 20% health, and Devouring Contagion cuts the Mana cost of Devouring Plague and spreads it to a new enemy within 5 yards when an afflicted target dies. Vampiric Embrace now lasts 30 seconds on a 1-minute cooldown. Soul Warding, the Discipline gold talent, reduces the cooldown and Mana cost of Power Word: Shield.

Race Options

Priest stays open to Human, Dwarf, Night Elf, Undead, and Troll as in Classic Era, with one addition: Gnome Priest, one of the six new race/class combinations confirmed for launch. Skyborne can’t play Priest at all. See our full Race and Class Combinations guide for the complete list. Every race’s two Priest racial spells were reevaluated, and the new or changed ones are below. Troll Priests’ racial spells are unchanged.

Priest Racial Spells

Race Racial Spell What It Does
Gnome Confounding Flash Learned at level 10. Confuses up to 5 nearby enemies for 3 seconds, broken by damage. 0.5-second cast, 2-minute cooldown
Gnome Contingency Plan Learned at level 20. Wards a friendly target for 30 seconds; if their health drops below 35%, they gain an absorb shield and a heal-over-time effect, which stack with Renew and Power Word: Shield. 5-minute cooldown
Dwarf Chastise Learned at level 20. Damages and immobilizes a Humanoid for 2 seconds. Instant cast, 2-minute cooldown
Human Divine Grace Learned at level 10. Instantly heals a friendly target below 50% health and clears the debuff left by Power Word: Shield. Can’t be cast on yourself. 5-minute cooldown
Night Elf Starshards Learned at level 10. Damage substantially increased, now with a 30-second cooldown
Night Elf Elune’s Grace Learned at level 20. Reduces the chance for melee and ranged attacks to hit you by 50% for 15 seconds or until 3 attacks have missed. 5-minute cooldown
Undead Dark Sacrifice Learned at level 20. Converts your own health into Mana over time, increased by Spirit

Tips & Tricks

Give Discipline a real look if you skipped it in Classic. With new talents like Power in Light, Twin Disciplines, Soul Warding, Penance, and Divine Aegis, it’s no longer just a detour on the way to Holy.

Skip hit gear as a healer. Holy Precision gives up to 18% hit chance with Holy spells, specifically so healing Priests don’t need to chase it.

Mind the cost of Shadow Word: Death. If the target survives, you take damage equal to 10% of your maximum health, so save it for kills.

Don’t assume Penance or Prayer of Mending are unique to Forever’s design. They’re borrowed from later expansions — if you’ve played retail WoW, you already know roughly how they work.

Don’t expect Fear Ward or Devouring Plague to feel racially gated anymore. Both open at level 20 for every race, so plan your utility around the spell itself, not who can cast it.
