Overview
Paladin was Blizzard’s own worked example when it showed off Forever’s class rework, and it’s among the classes that change the most. Every Paladin gets a new early weapon attack in
Holy Strike, a
Judgement that no longer eats your Seal, and
Consecration as a baseline ability, while Protection gains a real taunt and Holy and Retribution each gain new signature talents.
What Changed From Classic
If you played Paladin in Classic, the Seal and
Judgement interaction is the single biggest muscle-memory change here.
Judgement used to consume whatever Seal you had active — in Forever, it doesn’t, which really changes how you sequence your rotation.
Holy Strike is a real, active melee button from level 6 onward, and all three trees build on it:
Holy Power raises its critical strike chance by 15%,
Sacred Arbiter empowers it in Retribution, and
Iron Creed rewards well-timed uses in Protection.
Seal of Fury gives Protection Paladins a taunt Classic Paladins never had, but only while the Seal stays active.
Consecration‘s four target limit is deliberate, meant to keep AoE tanking useful without enabling unlimited room pulling.
Talent Trees
New and Changed Talents
Holy’s new talents reward a more varied healing rotation.
Voice of Truth grants temporary immunity to Silence and Interrupts,
Reverence lets you regenerate Mana from Spirit while casting, and
Infusion of Light shortens the cast time of
Holy Light after a critical
Holy Shock or
Flash of Light.
Consecrated Ground makes enemies inside your Consecration take increased Holy damage, and
Light’s Vigil gives Holy a high-cost cooldown that can reset
Holy Shock.
Protection’s Mana tools build on
Seal of Fury: Improved Seal of Fury grants Mana when the Seal absorbs damage, and
Shield Specialization grants additional Mana on blocks, so a tanking Paladin’s Seal and shield help feed its Mana.
Instrument of the Law is a 2-rank talent that makes
Hammer of Wrath faster to cast while reducing the threat it generates when
Righteous Fury isn’t active — a useful pickup for Retribution Paladins who don’t want to accidentally pull threat off a dedicated tank.
New and Changed Abilities
Blizzard specifically called out full specialization support across all three trees, with Retribution built to be a real damage spec, not just an option Paladins pick for utility.
Twist of Light, Retribution’s capstone, exists to support “Seal Twisting,” a manual play pattern of swapping Seals mid fight for maximum value.
Vindication has been reworked: it now reduces the target’s Attack Power while increasing your own, and
Champion of the Light increases your spell damage based on your Intellect.
Race Options
Paladin remains open to Human and Dwarf on the Alliance side. Forsaken Paladin, one of the six new race/class combinations confirmed for launch, gives the Horde its first Paladins in Classic Era.
Tips & Tricks
Stop recasting Seals after every
Judgement. That habit was necessary in Classic — in Forever, it just wastes time and Mana since
Judgement no longer consumes your active Seal.
Use
Holy Strike on cooldown. It’s an instant weapon strike on a 10-second cooldown that all three trees improve, so it belongs in your rotation from level 6 onward.
Keep
Seal of Fury active as Protection. It’s what turns
Judgement into a taunt, so if the Seal drops, so does your reliable way to pick up a mob.
Don’t expect
Consecration to clear a full room as Protection. Its baseline version only applies full damage to the first four enemies hit — plan multi-target pulls with that limit in mind rather than assuming unlimited AoE threat.
Prioritize
Sacred Arbiter early if you’re building Retribution. As the tree’s 16-point gold talent, it empowers
Holy Strike and keeps your
Judgement effects refreshed, meaning less manual upkeep once you have it.
