Overview

The Deadmines is most Alliance players’ first real dungeon — a long, linear tunnel system beneath Westfall ending in a pirate ship and Edwin VanCleef, leader of the Defias Brotherhood. It’s Alliance-only content, genuinely easy by later standards, and still one of the most memorable early-game dungeons in the game specifically because of its unique gunpowder-and-cannon door mechanic and its multi-phase final boss fights.

GOOD TO KNOW

After each of the first three bosses (Rhahk’Zor, Sneed, Gilnid) dies, a fresh patrol of 2-3 Defias mobs spawns and wanders back toward your group. Backtrack and clear these before pushing forward — they escalate in size the deeper you go, and getting caught between a patrol and a pull is the most common source of unnecessary wipes here.

Location and Level Range

The entrance is inside the Defias Hideout in Moonbrook, southwestern Westfall. Enemy levels run 16-22, with the Meeting Stone listing a wider 17-26 range — a party averaging level 18-23 handles it comfortably. Expect roughly 2-2.5 hours for a full clear.

Boss Quick Reference

Boss Key Mechanic Priority
Rhahk’Zor Simple tank and spank with an occasional knockdown Guarded by 2 ranged Defias Watchmen; easy first fight
Miner Johnson Optional rare spawn (~1 in 5 runs), no special abilities Pure tank and spank; check for him but don’t worry if he’s not up
Sneed’s Shredder → Sneed Shredder fears and is immune to burn/bleed/concussion; Sneed dual-wields and can Disarm Clear the room before pulling to avoid fear-related adds
Gilnid Comes with 3 adds in a room full of Melt Ore-casting Craftsmen and golem-summoning Engineers Interrupt the Engineer’s summon; watch for stacking Melt Ore debuffs
Mr. Smite Warstomp stuns the whole party at 75% and 50% health, unavoidable, then swaps to a stronger weapon each time Clear the 2 stealthed guards before pulling; damage continues through the stun
Cookie Optional; flees and pulls other mobs when close to death Burst him down before he can run
Captain Greenskin Arrives with 2 guards, one melee and one caster CC or Sap the caster, kill Greenskin first, then the melee add
Edwin VanCleef Final boss; pulls 2 stealthed guards, can stun, summons more adds as health drops CC both adds and burn VanCleef, or pick them off one at a time first

Critical Mechanics

NOTE

The gunpowder door. Partway through, you’ll find Defias Gunpowder in an alcove. Loot it and use it on the nearby cannon to blast open a locked gate — this is the dungeon’s signature mechanic and the only way through for most groups. A Rogue can pick the lock instead, which quietly avoids alerting Mr. Smite’s guards on the other side. Using the cannon does not have that benefit.

NOTE

Mr. Smite’s stuns are unavoidable. At 75% and 50% health, he stomps and stuns your entire party — there’s no interrupt or positioning trick that stops it. Keep DoTs and ongoing damage active through the stun where possible, and make sure your healer has mana banked for the moment control returns. [END BOX]

Notable Loot

Boss Notable Drop
Rhahk’Zor Rockslicer (common), Rhahk’Zor’s Hammer (rare)
Miner Johnson Gold-Plated Buckler, Miner’s Cape
Mr. Smite Smite’s Mighty Hammer
Cookie Cookie’s Tenderizer, Cat Carrier (Siamese) — a unique vanity pet found nowhere else
Captain Greenskin Emberstone Staff, Impaling Harpoon, Blackened Defias Belt
Edwin VanCleef Cruel Barb, An Unsent Letter (quest item)

GOOD TO KNOW

The full Blackened Defias set — Armor, Boots, Gloves, Belt, and Leggings — drops piecemeal across multiple bosses rather than from one source. A full clear is worth it if you’re collecting the set. Also worth noting: the Green Wing Macaw parrot pet drops from regular Defias Pirates found on the ship, not from any boss specifically.

Quests

Quest Level Pickup Objective
The Defias Brotherhood 14 Gryan Stoutmantle, Sentinel Hill (Westfall) Final step of a 7-part overworld chain; kill Edwin VanCleef and return his head to Gryan
Red Silk Bandanas 14 Scout Riell, Sentinel Hill (unlocked by the same chain) Collect 10 Red Silk Bandanas from elite Defias mobs, inside or outside the dungeon
The Test of Righteousness (Paladin only) 20 Part of the Paladin class chain Requires Whitestone Oak Lumber, found on Goblin Woodcarvers near Sneed
An Unsent Letter 16 Loot from Edwin VanCleef’s corpse Starts a follow-up chain leading toward the Stockade

GOOD TO KNOW

The Defias Brotherhood chain starts well before you ever reach the dungeon — pick it up from Gryan Stoutmantle at Sentinel Hill and work through the Westfall storyline first. By the time you’re actually standing at the Deadmines entrance, killing VanCleef should be the only step left.

Tips & Tricks

Don’t skip the optional bosses out of habit. Miner Johnson and Cookie are both low-effort fights that barely detour from the main path, and both drop items you can’t get anywhere else in the dungeon.

Bring a snare or a high-level Paladin for runners. Several trash mobs flee at low health and pull reinforcements. A Rogue’s Crippling Poison, a Shaman’s Frost Shock, or a Paladin’s Judgement of Justice all shut this down before it becomes a problem.

Decide on the cannon versus lockpicking before you get there. If you have a Rogue, picking the gate open avoids alerting Mr. Smite’s guards early. If not, the cannon works fine — just be ready for the fight the moment the door blows.

Save Test of Righteousness for a Paladin in your group specifically. The Whitestone Oak Lumber drop is easy to miss if nobody’s tracking that quest, and it’s a one-time pickup per run.
