Overview
Rogue levels with a 19 points in Assassination and 32 points in Combat, matching the approach most raiders eventually settle into at 60. The one real decision unique to leveling is weapon type, and it’s not just a flavor choice.
Backstab requires standing behind your target, and vanilla doesn’t have a working “frontstab” mechanic. In a group with a tank holding aggro, that’s easy to set up. Solo, it’s a real hassle. That single fact is why swords, not daggers, are the standard recommendation for solo leveling.
Talent Build
Key Choices:
Improved Sinister Strike, then
Remorseless Attacks — your first points, reducing your main combo-point builder’s energy cost early.
Riposte — a real damage and control talent, disarming the target for several seconds on top of dealing damage.
Dual Wield Specialization and
Sword Specialization — both meaningfully boost your auto-attack output, and Sword Specialization’s extra-attack proc becomes available around level 31.
Blade Flurry and
Adrenaline Rush — your two strongest cooldowns, and the combination genuinely changes how you handle multiple enemies at once.- After roughly 33 points in Combat, shift into Assassination for
Malice,
Ruthlessness,
Relentless Strikes, and
Lethality.
Sword Specialization’s bonus attack can actually interrupt your own auto-attack timing if it procs right before a natural swing was due. An addon that tracks your swing timer helps you play around this rather than losing part of the talent’s own value.
Weapon Choice
- 1
- Swords or Maces for solo leveling
the standard recommendation. No positioning requirement, works from any angle, and pairs directly with your Combat talent investment.
- 2
- Daggers for group and dungeon content
stronger DPS in a party setting where a tank makes Backstab positioning realistic, but noticeably harder to play solo.
- 3
- Fist weapons
functionally similar to swords, but hard to find good ones while leveling, which is why most players default to swords instead.
Keep training all your weapon skills as you level, even the ones you’re not actively using — it costs little and keeps your options open if you decide to switch weapon types or specs later.
Rotation
OPENER
- 1.
your primary combo point builder, usable from any angle with a sword.
- 2.
your finisher once you’re at full combo points.
PRIORITY
- 1.
build combo points.
- 2.
at 5 combo points — don’t waste a full 5-point finisher on a target that’s about to die anyway from ongoing damage.
- 3.
use both as crowd control and as a safe window to bandage yourself mid fight.
- 4.
interrupt spellcasters whenever it matters for the fight.
AOE
Once you have
Blade Flurry and
Adrenaline Rush, the combination lets you handle multiple enemies far more comfortably than earlier levels. Against a tough elite you can’t safely melee,
Crippling Poison paired with
Throw lets you kite indefinitely while chipping away at it from range.
Notable Leveling Weapons
Class Quest
At level 20, Rogues unlock poison making and Thistle Tea through a class quest — a real power spike, not a minor flavor unlock. Poisons meaningfully boost your damage output from this point forward, and Thistle Tea gives you a genuine energy management tool for tougher fights.
Race Choice
Orc for Horde (Axe Specialization synergy if going that route, plus general PvE strength), Human for Alliance (Sword Specialization matches the standard leveling weapon choice directly).
Professions
- 1
- Engineering
a strong pairing for the same utility reasons it appeals to other classes, and Rogues can make real use of its gadgets both leveling and at 60.
- 2
- Leatherworking
pairs naturally with a leather wearing class, letting you craft your own upgrades.
- 3
- Gathering professions (Herbalism, Mining, Skinning)
a solid gold focused alternative if crafted gear isn’t the priority.
Tips & Tricks
Don’t dump combo points on a nearly dead target. A 5-point Eviscerate on something that’s about to die from Sinister Strike alone is wasted potential you could’ve spent on the next pull instead.
Use Gouge as a bandaging window, not just crowd control. Popping Gouge specifically to create space for a bandage is one of Rogue’s few reliable self healing tools while leveling.
Pick swords for solo play unless you have a specific reason not to. Daggers are stronger in a group, but the positioning demands make them a rougher solo experience than most new Rogues expect.
Don’t skip the level 20 poison quest. It’s a real, meaningful upgrade to your damage output, not a side quest to get around to eventually.
