Overview
Molten Core is Classic’s first 40-player raid — 10 bosses across three wings, ending in Ragnaros. It’s built to teach a raid group the fundamentals: dispel discipline, add management, positioning, and the basic reflexes that carry into every harder raid that follows. It’s forgiving compared to what comes later, but individual mistakes on a handful of specific mechanics can still wipe a raid outright.
If your raid clears all 8 bosses before Majordomo Executus without realizing there’s a summoning mechanic involved, Majordomo won’t be there to fight — and without killing him, Ragnaros never spawns. See the Critical Mechanics section before your first attempt.

Critical Mechanics
These are the specific moments most likely to wipe an undergeared or under-informed raid. Everything else in Molten Core is genuinely forgiving by comparison.
Baron Geddon — Living Bomb. An undispellable debuff lands on a random player. That player must move away from the raid immediately — after 8 seconds it explodes for roughly 3,200 damage in a 45-yard radius. Standing still or staying near the group when this lands is the single most common Baron Geddon wipe.
Baron Geddon — Ignite Mana and Armageddon. Ignite Mana rapidly drains a random target’s mana and needs dispelling in priority order: healers first, then casters. At 2% health, Geddon casts Armageddon — kill him before it resolves, or every player in melee range takes roughly 8,500 damage when it goes off 5 seconds later.
Majordomo Executus — the rune trap. Seven burning runes are scattered around Molten Core. If they get doused, Majordomo disappears from his usual spot after you clear the first 8 bosses, and you’ll need seven Aqual Quintessence items from the Hydraxian Waterlords faction to summon him manually. Know this before it happens to your raid, not after.
Consumables
Fire Resistance gear and consumables matter more in Molten Core than almost anywhere else in Classic, given how many bosses deal heavy fire damage — Baron Geddon, Ragnaros, Golemagg, and Sulfuron’s adds among them.
- 1
- Fire Resistance gear or potions
for tanks, especially on Baron Geddon and Ragnaros specifically.
- 2
- Free Action Potions
for melee dealing with Gehennas’ Flamewaker stun effects
- 3
- Class-standard raid consumables
your usual Flask, Elixirs, and food buffs apply here the same as any other raid.
Tips & Tricks
Don’t accidentally douse the runes before you’re ready for Majordomo. Know what they look like and communicate with your raid before anyone interacts with anything unfamiliar on the floor.
Treat Baron Geddon with real respect despite the raid’s overall forgiving difficulty. It’s the one fight early in Molten Core where a single missed mechanic can genuinely end the attempt.
Assign
Tranquilizing Shot duty explicitly for Magmadar. Don’t leave
Frenzy removal to “whichever Hunter notices” — assign it directly to avoid the gap where nobody reacts in time.
Bank fire resistance gear even if you don’t need it every fight. Several bosses in this raid specifically punish not having it, and it’s cheap insurance for a raid that otherwise doesn’t demand much preparation.
