Overview
Molten Core’s attunement is technically a teleport unlock, not a raid access gate — the entrance portal sits at the end of Blackrock Depths, and any level 60 character could theoretically walk there without ever touching the quest. In practice, that distinction doesn’t matter much, because Molten Core resets weekly and your guild will be going back in every single week. Walking a full raid through Blackrock Depths on a recurring basis isn’t a realistic plan for anyone — get attuned, treat it as a genuine requirement, and move on.
The mechanical truth (attunement unlocks a teleport, it doesn’t gate the raid entrance itself) is worth knowing so you understand what the quest is actually doing. It is not an argument for skipping it. Every raider in your roster should get this done before your first lockout, full stop.
Requirements
- 1
- Level 55
to pick up the quest itself, though level 60 is realistically when it matters for actual raiding.
- 2
- No prior quest chain
Unlike Blackwing Lair’s attunement, there’s nothing to complete beforehand — you can walk straight to Lothos Riftwalker and grab the quest.
- 3
- A Blackrock Depths run
either solo or grouped, since the quest objective is located deep inside that dungeon.
Blackrock Depths itself is a genuinely large, maze-like dungeon, which is exactly why the attunement’s real value is the teleport shortcut rather than the quest itself. Once you’ve navigated it once for the fragment, you’re saving that entire trip on every future raid night.
Walkthrough
Once turned in, you can talk to Lothos Riftwalker any time afterward to teleport directly to the Molten Core entrance, bypassing Blackrock Depths entirely. This teleport works on every subsequent visit, not just your first, which is the actual long-term value of doing the quest at all.
The Lava Run Shortcut
A “lava run” is the standard efficient method for reaching the Core Fragment quickly, rather than clearing all of Blackrock Depths normally. It involves jumping off the platform near Lord Incendius to skip most of the dungeon and land close to the fragment’s location. This is commonly done alongside a group already running Blackrock Depths for other reasons, such as farming Emperor Dagran Thaurissan, and it turns what could be a lengthy dungeon crawl into a fast, incidental stop.
If you’re attuning solo, coordinate with a Blackrock Depths group already heading that direction rather than clearing the entire dungeon by yourself. Most groups running BRD for loot or quests will pass directly by the short tunnel leading to the fragment anyway, which makes this one of the easier attunements in the game to knock out incidentally rather than as dedicated effort.
Tips & Tricks
Get every raider attuned before your first lockout, not after. This isn’t optional in practice. Molten Core resets weekly, and a raid group re-walking Blackrock Depths every reset would burn hours your guild doesn’t have. Treat attunement as a hard prerequisite for joining the raid roster, technicalities aside.
Don’t confuse this with Blackwing Lair’s attunement in terms of difficulty. BWL’s chain is genuinely long and involves defeating Onyxia among other steps. Molten Core’s is short and can usually be knocked out in a single Blackrock Depths trip. Both end up mandatory in practice, but one costs you a lot more time to complete.
Grab the fragment while already in Blackrock Depths for other reasons. If you’re running BRD for the Detention Block, farming Emperor Dagran Thaurissan, or picking up pre-raid gear, the fragment is a short detour rather than a dedicated trip. There’s rarely a good reason to make attunement its own standalone outing.
Attune once and never think about it again. Unlike consumables or gear, this is a one-time unlock. Get it done during a normal BRD run rather than treating it as a separate raid-night task, and you’ll never have to think about Molten Core access again for the rest of your account’s life.

Attunement is a one-time gate to clear before Molten Core matters to your character at all. Once it’s done, the rest of your raid preparation shifts to gear, consumables, and knowing your class’s actual rotation — the parts of raiding that stay relevant every single week, unlike this quest.
