Mining is the backbone gathering profession for two of WoW Classic most gear focused crafts, Blacksmithing and Engineering, and it’s one of the simplest professions in the game to actually learn — a single trainer relationship covers every skill tier from Apprentice through Artisan, unlike most professions that send you hunting for a specific instructor at each rank. It’s also one of the more forgiving professions to level alongside your character, since ore nodes are scattered through zones you’re already questing in anyway.
Getting Started
Learn Mining from any trainer in a major city — there’s no level requirement to begin, and no need to revisit a different trainer as you rank up through Journeyman, Expert, and Artisan. Buy a 
Mining Pick from a Trade Goods or Mining Supplies vendor before you head out, and consider training Smelting recipes alongside your gathering skill from the same trainer while you’re there, since you’ll want that flexibility later.
Leveling Route (1-300)
Parts of the Winterspring and Burning Steppes routes run through territory patrolled by level 57-58 elites. Most classes can get through with careful pulling and practice, but it’s worth scouting the path once before committing to a full farming loop there, especially if you’re playing a class without strong stealth or escape options.
Smelting as an Alternative Path
You can level Mining up to skill 185 purely by smelting ore into bars at a forge, without mining a single additional node. This costs real gold if you’re buying ore off the Auction House rather than mining it yourself, but it’s a real, faster path if your character is already 60 and has spare gold to spend. It’s much less practical while leveling your character too, since you’re already passing through the exact zones that would give you the ore for free.
Smelting only carries you to 185, not further. Past that point, you’ll need to return to actually mining nodes — 
Mithril, 
Truesilver, and 
Thorium veins directly — to finish the climb to 300. Plan your gold accordingly if you’re leaning on smelting early, since the ore costs add up fast on the Auction House.
Endgame Mining
Once capped, Mining continues to pay for itself. Thorium sells consistently well throughout Wow Classic lifespan, and a single dedicated farming session in Winterspring or Un’Goro Crater can realistically cover the cost of an epic mount. Beyond gold, Mining directly feeds two crafting professions, and picking one to pair alongside it turns your gathering time into gear progress instead of pure Auction House income:

the most natural pairing, letting you craft your own weapon and armor upgrades from the ore you gather.

- Engineering
equally strong, especially if you’re leveling a class that benefits from Engineering’s utility gadgets.
Tips & Tricks
Enchant your gloves with bonus Mining skill if you can afford it. A cheap pair of gloves enchanted with +5 Mining skill makes yellow-tier nodes green sooner, meaningfully smoothing out the leveling process without costing much gold.
Chase the highest tier ore your skill allows, not just whatever’s closest. Nodes turn gray and stop giving skill ups once you’ve outleveled them — always prioritize the ore matching your current range over convenience, even if it means a slightly longer detour.
Don’t ignore bonus ore types within your route. 
Silver alongside Tin, 
Gold alongside Iron, and Truesilver alongside Mithril all count as legitimate skill ups when you find them, even though they’re not your primary target ore for that range.
Pair Mining with a crafting profession, not just for gold. Selling raw ore is fine, but Blacksmithing or Engineering turns the same materials into gear you’d otherwise be buying from someone else — and the difference in long-term value adds up fast once you’re geared out of dungeons and into raids.
