Overview
Engineering is Classic’s most gadget heavy profession — bombs, ranged weapon ammo, trinkets, and unique utility items no other profession can replicate. It’s also more complex than most crafting professions, thanks to a specialization split at skill level 200 that meaningfully changes what you can build for the rest of the profession’s life.
Engineering is widely considered the strongest profession for PvP and general utility across several classes — Hunters, Paladins, Rogues, Warriors, and Shamans in particular get real mileage out of its gadgets. It’s less about raw gold-making and more about giving your character tools nobody else has access to.
Getting Started
Learn Engineering from any trainer once you’re level 5. Pair it with Mining from the start — most of Engineering’s early and mid-game materials come directly from ore, and going in without a gathering profession means buying everything off the Auction House instead.
You’ll need an 
Arclight Spanner early on as a required crafting tool — check with your trainer for the exact tool recipe available at your skill level.
Leveling Route (1-300)
Don’t sell or disenchant intermediate crafted components like tubes, bolts, and gyrochronatoms as you level. Many of them become reagents for higher tier recipes later, and buying them back off the Auction House costs far more than just holding onto what you already made.
Choosing a Specialization
At skill level 200 (and character level 30), you’ll need to choose between Gnomish Engineering and Goblin Engineering. This isn’t a small flavor choice — it changes what you can craft for the rest of the profession.

leans toward equipment: wearable gadgets, trinkets, and gear slot items. Trainers are found in Ironforge and Booty Bay.

leans toward consumables: bombs, grenades, and combat throwables. Trainers are found in Undercity and Gadgetzan.
Most recipes crafted by one specialization can still be worn or used by an engineer of the other specialization — the split mainly restricts what you can craft, not always what you can use. Only a handful of items are hard-locked to a specific specialization on both ends.
If you’re a Gnome, note that your race grants a passive +15 Engineering skill from the Engineering Specialization racial trait — recipes stay at a higher success-chance color for 15 skill levels longer, which meaningfully smooths out the leveling process.

- A stun bomb useful in both PvE add management and PvP.
Tips & Tricks
Pair Engineering with Mining from day one. Going in without a gathering profession means paying full Auction House price for materials you could otherwise be farming yourself.
Hold onto intermediate crafted materials. Tubes, bolts, and other partially-finished components frequently become reagents for later, higher-tier recipes.
Pick your specialization based on playstyle, not just popularity. Gnomish suits players who want passive, wearable utility; Goblin suits players who want active, throwable tools for both PvE and PvP.
Budget extra materials for yellow-tier recipes. Several recipes in the leveling route stay a middling skill-up chance for a stretch near the end of their range — plan for a few extra crafts rather than assuming exact minimums will get you through.
