Overview
The Mallet of Zul’Farrak isn’t found in Zul’Farrak at all — it’s assembled entirely in the Hinterlands, across two separate elite-infested locations, before you ever set foot in the dungeon. It’s the only way to summon Gahz’rilla, the optional boss whose defeat unlocks
Carrot on a Stick — not as a direct loot drop, but as the reward for turning in a quest afterward. If you’re planning a Gahz’rilla run, this whole chain needs to happen first, outside the instance entirely.
Step One: The Altar of Zul
Step Two: Jintha’Alor
With the
Sacred Mallet in hand, head to Jintha’Alor, a separate troll complex elsewhere in the Hinterlands. It plays almost like its own open-air dungeon — elite mobs in the 46-50 range, spaced along a tiered, walled path you’ll need to fight your way up. It’s a real change in pace from the Altar of Zul: less a single fight, more a small campaign against a whole complex of enemies before you even reach the altar you actually need.
The altar you need is located between the two ponds at the back of the complex, not at the entrance. Players who’ve made this trip consistently describe the mobs on the way up as close together enough to cause accidental pulls — clear carefully rather than rushing through, and expect the climb itself to take real time, not just the fight at the top.
Once you reach the altar, use the
Sacred Mallet there. It transforms into the
Mallet of Zul’Farrak, completing the chain.
Using the Mallet
Only one person in your Zul’Farrak group actually needs to be carrying the
Mallet of Zul’Farrak. Use it at the sacred pool near the end of the dungeon to summon Gahz’rilla. Once summoned, the fight itself doesn’t require anything special beyond the Mallet — it’s a standard boss encounter, just one gated behind this specific item rather than being available by default like the rest of the dungeon’s bosses.
If someone else in your dungeon group already has a
Mallet of Zul’Farrak, you don’t need to make the Jintha’Alor trip at all. Check with your group before committing real time to this chain — it’s entirely possible someone’s already done the legwork.
Tips & Tricks
Buff up before engaging Qiaga. She’s a level 50 elite, and going in under prepared is a common way to turn an easy kill into a wipe.
Don’t rush Jintha’Alor’s approach. The elite density there causes more accidental pulls than almost anywhere else in the Hinterlands — controlled pulling matters more than speed, and a wipe here costs you a full corpse run back through elite territory.
Ask your group before starting the chain. Since only one Mallet is needed per Zul’Farrak run, confirming nobody else already has one saves you an entirely unnecessary trip across two elite-heavy zones for nothing.
Plan this before you queue for Zul’Farrak, not during. The Altar of Zul and Jintha’Alor are both real detours from a normal Hinterlands route — decide ahead of time rather than making your group wait mid-session while someone runs off to farm a mallet nobody confirmed they actually needed.
