Overview
Carrot on a Stick is one of the most recognizable trinkets in Classic leveling — a real speed upgrade available well before most players would otherwise get access to something similar. It comes from a single quest tied to Zul’Farrak’s optional boss, Gahz’rilla, but getting there requires real preparation outside the dungeon first. Unlike most trinkets you’ll pick up naturally while questing, this one has to be pursued deliberately, since none of the steps happen automatically along a normal leveling route.
Before You Start
- Reach level 40. This is the hard requirement for accepting the quest at all — there’s no way around it, even with a fully prepared group.
- Get the
Mallet of Zul’Farrak. Without it, Gahz’rilla can’t be summoned at all, and the quest is impossible to complete. See our full guide on building one — it’s assembled entirely outside Zul’Farrak, in the Hinterlands, across two separate elite-infested locations. - Accept the quest before you head into the dungeon. Wizzle Brassbolts, who gives and completes this quest, is found at the Shimmering Flats in Thousand Needles — nowhere near Zul’Farrak itself, so it’s easy to forget if you’re not planning ahead.
Alliance players may notice a related quest,
The Brassbolts Brothers given by Klockmort Spannerspan in Tinker Town, Ironforge. It isn’t required for Gahz’rilla specifically — you don’t need to complete it to pick up the quest from Wizzle Brassbolts — but it’s a natural breadcrumb quest to grab in the same trip if you’re already leveling through Ironforge.
Completing the Quest
The quest is shareable, so if one person in your group already has it active, everyone else can pick it up on the spot rather than making a separate trip back to Thousand Needles first.
The Trinket Itself
Carrot on a Stick equips in the trinket slot and increases mount speed by 3%.
Because the trinket slot is otherwise contested by damage options, some players hold off on equipping Carrot on a Stick outside of travel specifically, swapping it in only when they know they’ll be spending real time on the road. Others simply leave it in permanently through their 40s and 50s, since a mount speed trinket rarely competes directly with what else you’d otherwise put in that slot at this level range.
Tips & Tricks
Don’t skip the Mallet step, even if it feels like a detour. Without it, there’s no way to summon Gahz’rilla at all, regardless of how prepared you are for the rest of the quest.
Accept the quest before your dungeon run, not after. Wizzle Brassbolts is nowhere near Zul’Farrak, so working the pickup into your existing travel plans saves a dedicated trip.
Coordinate the Mallet with your group ahead of time. Since only one person needs to carry it, confirm who’s bringing one before everyone shows up expecting someone else to have handled it.
Treat this as a genuine leveling priority, not a side detour. The speed bonus is useful for a long stretch of your leveling journey, not just a novelty item you’ll forget about after a few levels.
