Patch Classic WoW

Overview

Gnomeregan is a level 29-38 dungeon in Dun Morogh, the former capital of the gnomes. When troggs invaded, High Tinker Mekkatorque vented the city’s radioactive waste to drive them out. It didn’t work, and the gnomes fled to Ironforge, leaving the city to irradiated troggs and to Mekgineer Thermaplugg, the advisor rumored to have betrayed them.

It’s one of the hardest Classic dungeons to find your way around: big, with several alternative paths and two entrances. Most groups go in during their low 30s, although it can be done in the late 20s. Twelve quests send you here, seven for the Alliance, two for the Horde and three for both.

Playing WoW Forever? See our Gnomeregan Guide (WoW Forever), which covers the changed loot and quest rewards.

Location and Level Range

Gnomeregan is in western Dun Morogh. Alliance players leave Ironforge and travel west along the road.

Horde players can also make the trip to Dun Morogh, but there’s an easier way. Speak to Sovik in the Engineering shop in Orgrimmar to get Chief Engineer Scooty, then take the boat from Ratchet to Booty Bay and find Scooty on the lower floor of the docks, close to the inn. Completing his follow-up, Gnomer-gooooone!, gives you a Goblin Transponder and teleports you to Gnomeregan.

Entrances

Both entrances are in the Train Depot, the area Horde players teleport into, near the elevator:

  • Front entrance, on the west side of the Train Depot. It leads to The Clockwerk Run near Viscous Fallout.
  • Back entrance, on the north side of the Train Depot. It leads to the Engineering Labs near Crowd Pummeler 9-60, and needs either the Workshop Key, which drops from Electrocutioner 6000, or a Rogue with at least 150 Lockpicking.

Boss Quick Reference

Boss Key Mechanic Priority
Grubbis Only spawns during an event. Speak to Blastmaster Emi Shortfuse in the cave near the entrance, and mobs pour out of the caves until Emi closes them off with explosives Be ready for the mobs that pour out once the event starts. Grubbis comes out of the second cave before the explosives go off
Viscous Fallout On the irradiated ground floor of the Hall of Gears Clear the trash around it first so you can pull it without adds
Electrocutioner 6000 On the raised launch pad in the Launch Bay. Chain Bolt, Megavolt and Shock Drops the Workshop Key, which opens the back entrance on later runs
Crowd Pummeler 9-60 A large robot in the Engineering Labs. Arcing Smash, Crowd Pummel and Trample Found on the upper southern ledge. Data Rescue‘s machine D is just below him
Dark Iron Ambassador (rare) Rare spawn that patrols the north side of the last tunnel. Fire Shield, Fireball and Summon Burning Servant Not always there. Kill him if he is
Mekgineer Thermaplugg Final boss. Walking Bombs come out of six bomb dispensers during the fight. Knock Away Kill the bombs before they reach the group, or send one player to press the button on the right-hand side of each dispenser to shut it down

Critical Mechanics

Deal with Thermaplugg’s Walking Bombs. Six dispensers around the Tinkers’ Court release bombs throughout the fight. Either kill them before they reach the group, or give one player the job of pressing the button on the right of each dispenser to shut it off.

Get the Workshop Key. Electrocutioner 6000 drops it, and it opens the back entrance straight into the Engineering Labs. Groups without a Rogue who has 150 Lockpicking need it to use that entrance.

Collect radioactive fallout while the mob is alive. The Alliance quests Gnogaine and The Only Cure is More Green Glow need fallout from living irradiated mobs. Use the phial next to one before you kill it, because you can’t collect from a corpse.

Notable Loot

Engineers should open every Box of Assorted Parts they find. They hold Engineering materials such as Bronze Tube, Heavy Blasting Powder and Standard Scope. There are boxes in the upper center of the Hall of Gears, in the cave near Blastmaster Emi Shortfuse, and in a bunker in the Dormitory. Large Solid Chests are in the upper center of the Hall of Gears, the upper east of the Engineering Labs and a Dormitory bunker.

Quests

You need to be level 25 on either faction to pick up all the Gnomeregan quests.

Chief Engineer Scooty (Horde) 20 Sovik, Orgrimmar (after starting Rig Wars) Speak to Scooty in Booty Bay. Its follow-up, Gnomer-gooooone!, rewards the Goblin Transponder

For Data Rescue, the White Punch Card drops from mobs outside the instance. Use it in machine A near Techbot (outside) for the Yellow Punch Card, machine B just past the Clean Room for the Blue Punch Card, machine C on Electrocutioner 6000’s platform for the Red Punch Card, and machine D below Crowd Pummeler 9-60 for the Prismatic Punch Card.

The Essential Artificials are often tucked around corners or behind pillars, so look carefully as you go.

Tips & Tricks

Do Save Techbot’s Brain! and the first punch card together. Techbot and machine A are both in the Train Depot outside the instance, and the troggs there drop the White Punch Card.

Horde: grab Chief Engineer Scooty early. The Goblin Transponder lets you teleport between Booty Bay and Gnomeregan, which saves a very long trip through Alliance land.

Keep your Grime-Encrusted Objects. You’ll pass the Sparklematic 5200 machines in The Clean Room, so bring some silver along.

Learn the route. Gnomeregan has several paths and two entrances. Ask someone who knows the way, or use the bosses as waypoints: the instance map numbers them Grubbis, Viscous Fallout, Electrocutioner 6000, Crowd Pummeler 9-60, the Dark Iron Ambassador and Thermaplugg.
