Overview

Dire Maul West — the Capital Gardens — requires the Crescent Key to enter and plays as a mid difficulty wing between East and North. Its defining feature is a series of crystal pylons that gate your progress toward the wing’s two toughest fights.

Don’t have a Crescent Key yet? See our full Crescent Key guide for the complete walkthrough, including legitimate ways to bypass the lock entirely.

Layout and Access

Several large crystal pylons are scattered through the wing, each guarded by hostile mobs. Deactivating them is what actually opens the path forward — first toward Tendris Warpwood, and later toward Immol’thar’s chamber deeper in.

Boss Guide

Tendris Warpwood

Is the wing’s opening gatekeeper — a massive ancient guardian who roots your group repeatedly, summons smaller tree adds throughout the fight, and hits hard with a Trample attack that includes a real knockback. Nothing here is complicated, but the combination of roots and adds punishes a group that isn’t paying attention.

Illyanna Ravenoak

Accompanied by her pet bear Ferra, is best handled by simply closing to melee range — her ranged abilities are effectively nullified once you’re standing next to her. Watch for an Immolation Trap she can place during the fight.

Magister Kalendris

Is optional, and most groups skip him entirely — the undead trash surrounding him is disproportionately difficult relative to the reward for killing him. If you do go for him, bring more non melee DPS than usual; he’s a Shadow magic caster who punishes a melee heavy group.

Tsu’zee

Is a rare spawn that doesn’t always appear. If she’s up, she’s a worthwhile bonus kill, but there’s no way to guarantee her presence on any given run.

Immol’thar

Can’t be damaged until the night elves surrounding him are cleared first. Once that’s done, he becomes attackable — but he continuously summons Eyes of Immol’thar adds throughout the fight. They’re easy to kill, but ignoring them lets them pile up fast.

Lord Hel’nurath

Doesn’t appear on a normal run at all — he’s summoned specifically as part of a quest chain, not a standing encounter you’ll stumble into.

Prince Tortheldrin

Is the wing’s actual final boss. He fights primarily as a fast melee attacker, periodically teleports a random player directly in front of him, and can Counterspell whoever’s casting at the wrong moment. None of his individual abilities are especially dangerous, but the combination demands attention from your whole group, not just the tank.

Critical Mechanics

Immol’thar requires clearing his guardians first, not a direct pull. The night elves surrounding him need to die before he’s even attackable — trying to engage him directly just wastes time.

A hidden chest waits behind the right quest. Pick up The Madness Within from Shen’dralar Ancient, on the bridge in the Court of the Highborne, before you fight Immol’thar and Tortheldrin. After killing both and turning the quest back in, you’ll unlock a follow-up quest leading to a chest hidden under the stairs near Tortheldrin’s room — letting you choose one of three rewards. Skip the quest, and you’ll walk right past this without ever knowing it was there.

Quests

The Madness Within picked up from Shen’dralar Ancient inside the wing itself, requires defeating both Immol’thar and Prince Tortheldrin — and leads directly to the hidden chest mentioned above. See our full Dire Maul Quests Guide for the rest of the dungeon’s quest content.

Tips & Tricks

Pick up The Madness Within before you start killing bosses, not after. Missing this step means missing the hidden reward chest entirely, with no way to go back for it later in the same run.

Skip Magister Kalendris unless your group specifically wants the fight. The surrounding trash difficulty rarely justifies the loot for most groups.

Close to melee range against Illyanna Ravenoak. It’s the single easiest way to shut down most of her offense.

Keep the Eyes of Immol’thar cleared throughout the fight. They’re individually easy, but letting several stack up at once adds real unnecessary pressure.
