Overview
Dire Maul is split into three wings — East, West, and North — and only East is accessible without a key. West and North both require the
Crescent Key to enter, and getting one involves an actual chase sequence, not just a boss kill.
You don’t strictly need the Crescent Key at all. Rogues, Engineers, and Blacksmiths all have legitimate ways to bypass the lock entirely — covered below, in case your group doesn’t want to bother with the chase.
Getting the Crescent Key
Only one person in your group actually needs to unlock the door — once it’s open, everyone can pass through. The one exception is the outer entrance itself, which resets to locked once closed, so don’t wander off and expect it to still be open when you come back.
Pusillin’s death isn’t just a key drop — he also carries a
Book of Incantations tied to a quest
Pusillin and the Elder Azj’Tordin. See our full Quests guide if you want that reward too, since it’s easy to loot the key and walk away without realizing there’s more here.
What Else the Key Unlocks
The
Crescent Key isn’t single purpose. Beyond opening West and North, it also unlocks a shortcut entrance back into Dire Maul East itself, located at the Lariss Pavilion just north of Camp Mojache — useful if you need to return to East later without running the long way around.
Entering Without a Key
- Rogue with 300+ Lockpicking — can open the door directly, no key needed.
- Engineer with a
Powerful Seaforium Charge — blows the lock open. - Blacksmith carrying an
Arcanite Skeleton Key — an alternate craftable option.
Tips & Tricks
Check your group’s professions before starting the chase. A Rogue or a prepared Engineer can skip this whole process — don’t waste time if someone can just open the door directly.
Hold onto extra
Crescent Keys if you get one. The East Wing shortcut it unlocks is a convenience for later trips, not just a one time-use item for this specific run.
