Overview
Protection Paladin — often called “Tankadin” — is Classic’s premier AoE tank. Where Warriors lean on Sunder Armor stacking for single-target threat, Paladins generate threat through Holy damage: Consecration, Holy Shield, and a Righteous-Fury-boosted Seal of Righteousness. The result is a tank that can hold a full pack of mobs almost effortlessly.
Protection Paladins generate the vast majority of their threat from Holy spell damage, not Strength. This means your itemization priorities look genuinely different from a Warrior tank’s — Spell Damage matters more to you than it does to almost anyone else wearing plate.
Strengths & Weaknesses
- Best AoE tank in Classic, by a wide margin, thanks to Consecration
- Strong personal survivability from Holy Shield and Blessing of Sanctuary
- Some emergency self-healing capability other tanks simply don’t have
- Excellent for five-man dungeon tanking specifically
- Extremely mana-hungry — consumable-dependent in a way few other specs are
- Single-target threat is weaker than a well-played Protection Warrior
- Heavy reliance on consumables isn’t optional the way it is for other classes
- Fewer raids run multiple Protection Paladins compared to Warrior tanks
The standard raid build is 11/31/9 (Holy/Protection/Retribution). The 11 points in Holy are mandatory for Consecration, your core AoE threat tool, plus Divine Strength and Improved Seal of Righteousness for meaningful threat gains. The 31 points in Protection get you Holy Shield — your single most important ability. The remaining 9 points typically go into Benediction and Deflection in Retribution, since Protection Paladins genuinely struggle with mana and need every efficiency talent they can get.

Key Choices:
- Holy Shield — your most important ability, full stop. Keep it active on cooldown at all times while tanking.
- Reckoning — only 3 points are typically needed to unlock the effect while leveling/tanking multiple mobs; it’s a supporting tool, not something to deep-invest in the way the “Tankadin” nickname might suggest.
- Benediction — a 15% mana cost reduction on Seals and Judgements that adds up fast given how mana-constrained this spec is.
Stat Priority
- 1
- Spell Damage / Holy Damage
this is your real threat stat. It boosts Consecration, Holy Shield, and Seal of Righteousness, all of which benefit from Righteous Fury’s threat multiplier. Strength only affects melee attacks, a smaller slice of your total threat.
- 2
- Stamina
your core survivability stat, same as any tank.
- 3
- Defense Rating
target roughly 350-400 Defense Skill rather than a hard 440. Unlike Warriors, Paladins actually benefit from occasional crits taken, since they proc Redoubt and Reckoning.
- 4
- Intellect
expands your mana pool, which is a constant concern for this spec.
Don’t chase the full 440 Defense Skill the way a Warrior would. Protection Paladins want some avoidance and mitigation, but a small amount of crit exposure is actually useful here — aim for roughly 350-400 instead.

Tips & Tricks
Budget for consumables every single raid: This is not an optional-extras spec. Mana potions and Runes are close to mandatory, not a luxury.
Don’t over-gear Defense: Unlike Warriors, you don’t need the full uncrittable threshold — 350-400 Defense Skill is the sweet spot, since some crit exposure actually helps you.
Lean on your emergency healing: Talents like Illumination give you real Flash of Light or Holy Light utility during low-threat moments, especially valuable in five-mans when your healer needs support.
Holy Shield first, always: If you’re ever choosing between abilities on cooldown, Holy Shield takes priority — it’s your core mitigation and a real threat source at once.
