Overview
Arms is not the raid-DPS meta pick in Classic — that’s Fury. What Arms actually is: the best leveling spec in the game, a genuinely strong PvP spec, and a situationally excellent pick for 5-man dungeons and early raid tiers. This guide covers Arms as it’s actually played, not as a lesser version of Fury.
Arms loses raid-DPS ground to Fury for a specific mechanical reason: Mortal Strike applies a debuff, and Classic raid bosses can only hold 16 debuffs at once. Many raid leaders restrict or ban Mortal Strike to preserve slots for Sunder Armor and other priority effects.
Strengths & Weaknesses
- The best leveling spec in the game — Mortal Strike and Sweeping Strikes make solo content and questing far smoother than Fury
- Strong PvP spec thanks to Mortal Strike’s 50% healing reduction debuff
- Less gear-dependent early on than Fury — big two-handed weapons hit hard even without a full raid-BiS kit
- Genuinely useful in 5-man dungeons, especially AoE-heavy trash pulls with Sweeping Strikes
- Can competently off-tank or tank 5-mans in a pinch thanks to Tactical Mastery
- Lower sustained raid DPS than Fury once both specs are similarly geared
- Mortal Strike competes for one of only 16 debuff slots on a raid boss — many raid leaders restrict or ban it outright
- Most guilds cap Arms Warriors at 1-2 per raid, if they take any at all
- Largely gets phased out in favor of Fury once your guild is progressing through harder raid tiers
Talents
The standard build spends 31 points in Arms and 20 points in Fury, picking up
Mortal Strike,
Sweeping Strikes, and
Improved Overpower in Arms, with
Cruelty and other efficiency talents from Fury.
Key Choices:
- Mortal Strike — your signature ability, but confirm with your raid leader before using it in raids; many restrict it to preserve debuff slots.
- Tactical Mastery — worth a point or two if you expect to off-tank or tank 5-man dungeons.
- Weapon Specialization — swap points into whichever weapon type you’re actually using: Sword Specialization, Axe Specialization, or Mace Specialization. Mace Specialization is generally weakest for PvE due to stun immunity on many raid targets.
Stat Priority
- 1
- Hit Rating
depends on your weapon skill. With a racial bonus pushing you to 305 skill (Human on swords/maces, Orc on axes), 9% hit from gear is enough. Without it, at base 300 skill, you’ll need closer to 15% to reach the same effective accuracy.
- 2
- Critical Strike
strong thanks to
Impale and Arms’ crit-scaling talents.
- 3
- Attack Power
good, but secondary to raw weapon damage for Mortal Strike specifically.
- 4
- Strength
solid as always, converts directly to Attack Power.
Check your weapon skill before chasing hit rating gear. If you’re not using your racial weapon specialization’s weapon type, you’re aiming at a much higher hit requirement than most guides assume.
Rotation
OPENER
- 1.
buff before the pull if you’re responsible for it.
- 2.
your primary opener, if cleared for raid use.
- 3.
apply if it’ll run its full duration before the fight ends.
- 4.
start stacking early while the target is at full health.
PRIORITY
- 1.
on cooldown, if your raid leader has approved it.
- 2.
maintain uptime when there’s time for it to run its course.
- 3.
keep stacked, especially early in the fight.
- 4.
or
Slam — filler and rage dump; use Slam if you’ve taken
Improved Slam to cut its cast time, otherwise Heroic Strike.
- 5.
takes over once the target drops below 20% health.
AOE
- 1.
+
Whirlwind — genuinely one of the best AoE combos in Classic, full stop.
- 2.
rage dump alternative against multiple targets.
- 3.
prioritize the primary kill target if the pack has one.
Consumables
- Flask
Standard survivability flask for progression raiding
- Elixir
+25 Agility, +2% crit — standard battle elixir
- Elixir
+25 Strength — alternative/stacking guardian elixir
- Food
+20 Strength for 15 minutes
- Potion
Instant rage burst + Strength; save for execute phase or rage-starved moments
- Weapon Buff
+2% crit to all attacks
- Buff Item
+Attack Power; pick one, don’t stack both
Gear
Arms shares most of its gear pool with Fury, but prioritizes hit rating more aggressively due to the weapon-skill-dependent hit mechanics above. Two-handed weapon damage matters more here than crit or Attack Power on the rest of your kit.
- Main-Hand Weapon
High-damage two-hander with good weapon skill match
Any solid two-hander from dungeon farming pre-raid
- Trinket
Strength or Attack Power proc trinkets
Straightforward stat trinkets
- Weapon Enchant
Crusader or a straight damage enchant depending on playstyleElemental Sharpening Stone as a temporary option
Tips & Tricks
Don’t fight your raid leader on Mortal Strike: If you’re told not to use it, time
Heroic Strike carefully instead so it doesn’t eat into your auto-attack timing, and accept you’re playing a slightly weaker version of the spec for the raid’s debuff economy.
Check your weapon skill first: A lot of “Arms feels weak” complaints trace back to using an off-race weapon type without realizing the hit penalty that comes with it.
Lean into Sweeping Strikes for dungeons: This is the one place Arms doesn’t just compete with Fury — it outright wins, no caveats.
Know when to switch to Fury: Once your guild is deep into progression raiding and debuff slots get competitive, most Arms Warriors respec. It’s not a skill issue — it’s just where the numbers land once gear catches up.
