Patch WoW Forever

Overview

Gnomeregan, often shortened to Gnomer, is the fallen gnome capital under north-western Dun Morogh, a Classic dungeon for levels 29-38 that Forever carries over with its layout, bosses, and quests intact. What changed is the loot and the quest rewards. It’s one of the longest dungeons of its level, with radiation, leper gnomes, and runaway machines on three levels, and two things trip up most groups: the punch card chain for the Alliance quest Data Rescue, and the Workshop Key that opens the back door. Both factions can run it.

Playing Classic Era? See our Gnomeregan Guide (WoW Classic).

Getting to Gnomeregan

The entrance building and its meeting stone stand at about 24, 40 in north-western Dun Morogh. An elevator inside takes you down to the Train Depot, and a tunnel leads west from there to the instance portal. Alliance players walk in from Ironforge, and Horde players can use a Goblin Transponder to teleport straight into the Train Depot.

Step Action
1 Fly to Ironforge, or take the Deeprun Tram from Stormwind.
2 Leave Ironforge through the gates and follow the road west past Kharanos. At the crossroads by Kharanos, a signpost points to Gnomeregan.
3 Continue north-west to the entrance building at about 24, 40. The meeting stone stands right next to it.
4 Take the elevator down to the Train Depot and walk west through the tunnel to the portal.

Horde Route

Step Action
1 Accept Rig Wars from Nogg in Orgrimmar, then pick up Chief Engineer Scooty from Sovik beside him.
2 Take the zeppelin to Grom’gol and fly on to Booty Bay. Scooty stands there and gives you Gnomer-gooooone!,” which ends with the Goblin Transponder.
3 With the transponder, step on the teleporter pad next to Scooty. It sends you to the Train Depot under Gnomeregan, and a pad there takes you back.
4 Without the transponder, fly to Kargath in the Badlands, run north through Loch Modan and the tunnel into Dun Morogh, then west past Kharanos to the entrance. Alliance guards patrol the road near Ironforge.

The gnomes in the Clean Zone are friendly to Alliance players and elite enemies to Horde players, so Horde groups should pull carefully there.

Gnomeregan Map

Use the map below to get oriented before your first run, then follow the route table to see what waits in each area.

Route Through the Dungeon

Step Action
1 Train Depot: the outer city at the bottom of the elevator, still outside the instance. Glowing troggs roam here, Techbot waits by the Workshop door, and the first Matrix Punchograph is out here too.
2 The Hall of Gears: the first big octagon past the portal. Viscous Fallout hides among the oozes at the bottom, and dropping off the ledge is the quick way down.
3 Collapsed tunnel: off the east side of the Hall of Gears. Blastmaster Emi Shortfuse starts the trogg waves that end with Grubbis and his basilisk Chomper.
4 The Clean Zone: a gnome holdout next to the Hall of Gears with Tink Sprocketwhistle’s supplies and three Sparklematic 5200 machines.
5 The Dormitory: rows of rooms with Caverndeep Reavers and alarm bots. Kernobee waits in a small room on the far west side, and the second Matrix Punchograph is here.
6 Launch Bay: the big round hall. Electrocutioner 6000 stands on the central platform next to the third Matrix Punchograph.
7 Engineering Labs: the octagon south of the Launch Bay. Crowd Pummeler 9-60 stands on the south side and is easy to walk past. The last Matrix Punchograph is on the lower level, and the Workshop back door comes in here.
8 Hallway to Tinkers’ Court: a long hallway west from the labs where the rare Dark Iron Ambassador can stand. Dark Iron Agents lay mines here.
9 Tinkers’ Court: the round throne hall at the west end where Mekgineer Thermaplugg waits. Clear the hallway completely before you pull him.

Boss Quick Reference

Boss Key Mechanic Priority
Techbot (outside the instance) A mechanical boss in the Train Depot by the Workshop door. Battle Net roots nearby players, Lag slows and can stun, and he summons Dupe Bugs and uses Patch to kill them and heal himself Kill the Dupe Bugs before he can Patch, and keep ranged players back
Viscous Fallout (optional) An ooze at the bottom of the Hall of Gears that looks like the oozes around it. Toxic Volley hits everyone near him with Nature damage and a poison Target him by name to find him before you pull extra oozes, and cure the poison
Grubbis (optional) The end of Blastmaster Emi Shortfuse’s event in the collapsed tunnel: waves of troggs, then Grubbis and his basilisk Chomper Hold each wave at the tunnel mouths, and don’t run into the tunnel because it collapses
Electrocutioner 6000 A spider tank on the Launch Bay platform. Chain Bolt jumps to up to 3 players, Megavolt hits a cone, and Shock is an instant bolt Interrupt Chain Bolt, spread out, and turn him away from the group. He drops the Workshop Key
Crowd Pummeler 9-60 A mechanical boss on the south side of the Engineering Labs. Crowd Pummel hits everyone in melee and can interrupt spells for 5 seconds Healers and casters stay out of melee range, and face him away from the group
Dark Iron Ambassador (rare) A Dark Iron fire mage in the hallway to Tinkers’ Court who isn’t up every run. Fireball, Fire Shield, and a summoned Burning Servant Interrupt Fireball, dispel Fire Shield, and keep the servant on the tank
Mekgineer Thermaplugg The final boss, in Tinkers’ Court. He switches on bomb machines on the walls that send Walking Bombs at players, and Knock Away costs the tank threat Give one player button duty to switch the machines off, and keep a second player high on threat

Most wipes in Gnomeregan start in the corridors, not at the bosses. Irradiated Pillagers enrage and irradiate players, and an irradiated player hurts everyone next to them, so step apart. Irradiated Horrors burn Mana with Chain Burn, so kill or interrupt them first. Leprous Machinesmiths and Technicians supercharge and repair the machines around them, so kill the gnomes first. Arcane Nullifier X-21s use Reflection Field, which bounces every harmful spell back for 5 seconds, so casters stop while it’s up.

Punch Cards and the Workshop Key

Two items are worth planning for in Gnomeregan. The punch cards complete the Alliance quest Data Rescue, and the Workshop Key opens a back door that skips half the dungeon after a wipe.

Punch Card Chain

Step Action
1 Kill mobs outside or inside the instance until one drops a White Punch Card.
2 Use the White Punch Card on Matrix Punchograph 3005-A, near Techbot in the Train Depot outside the instance, to get a Yellow Punch Card.
3 Use the Yellow Punch Card on Matrix Punchograph 3005-B in the Dormitory to get a Blue Punch Card.
4 Use the Blue Punch Card on Matrix Punchograph 3005-C on Electrocutioner 6000’s platform in the Launch Bay to get a Red Punch Card.
5 Use the Red Punch Card on Matrix Punchograph 3005-D on the lower level of the Engineering Labs, below Crowd Pummeler 9-60, to get a Prismatic Punch Card.
6 Bring the Prismatic Punch Card to Master Mechanic Castpipe in Ironforge to complete Data Rescue.

Data Rescue is an Alliance quest, and it needs Castpipe’s Task first. Horde players can’t hand the card in, so the chain only matters to them if they’re helping an Alliance friend.

The Workshop Key

Step Action
1 Kill Electrocutioner 6000 on the Launch Bay platform and loot the Workshop Key.
2 Go to the Workshop door at the north end of the Train Depot, where Techbot stands outside the instance.
3 Open the door with the key. It leads straight into the Engineering Labs, near Crowd Pummeler 9-60.
4 No key? A Rogue with 150 Lockpicking can pick the lock.

Keep the Workshop Key. After a wipe deep inside the dungeon, or on a second run, the back door takes you straight into the Engineering Labs, so you skip the long walk through the Hall of Gears, the Dormitory, and the Launch Bay.

Critical Mechanics

Kill the Mobile Alert Systems first. If one lives, it calls Alarm-a-bombs and elite Mechanized Guardians, which wiped many groups in Classic. Its flare also reveals stealthed players, and the Guardians root you with Electrified Net.

Bring interrupts. Electrocutioner 6000’s Chain Bolt, the Dark Iron Ambassador’s Fireball, and the Irradiated Horrors’ Chain Burn all hurt when they land, so two players with an interrupt make the run much calmer.

Plan around the machines. Most enemies past the Dormitory are mechanical, so as in Classic, Polymorph and Sap don’t work on them, while stuns and Freezing Trap do. Arcane Nullifier X-21s bounce harmful spells back with Reflection Field, so casters should stop while it’s up.

Thermaplugg’s bomb machines need a button presser. Each machine on the walls has a red button on its side that shuts it off. Assign one player to switch them off, and keep a second player high on threat, because Knock Away throws the tank back and costs threat.

Watch for mines in the hallway to Tinkers’ Court. Dark Iron Agents lay Dark Iron Land Mines there, and a mine blows up when anyone walks near it. Pull the agents back toward the labs and fight away from the mines, which fade after a minute.

Notable Loot

Boss Notable Drops
Techbot (outside the instance) Techbot’s Memory Core (quest item)
Grubbis Grubbis Paws
Viscous Fallout Acidic Walkers, Hydrocane, Toxic Revenger
Electrocutioner 6000 Electrocutioner Leg, Electrocutioner Lagnut, Spidertank Oilrag, Workshop Key
Crowd Pummeler 9-60 Manual Crowd Pummeler, Gnomebot Operating Boots
Mekgineer Thermaplugg Thermaplugg’s Central Core, Charged Gear
Dark Iron Ambassador (rare) Emissary Cuffs, Glass Shooter, Royal Diplomatic Scepter
Casters win the most in Forever: Hydrocane, Spidertank Oilrag, Gnomebot Operating Boots, and Electrocutioner Lagnut all carry spell power now. Hydrocane no longer lets you breathe underwater, and the Manual Crowd Pummeler is unique now, with a 3-minute cooldown. Two of Thermaplugg’s Classic drops are gone, so he drops only Thermaplugg’s Central Core and Charged Gear, which need level 31 instead of 32. Trash packs also drop rare bind-on-equip items, so check the auction house too. This is from beta data and may still change.

Levels in the tables are the quests’ own levels. Most can be accepted from level 20 to 28, with Data Rescue and The Grand Betrayal from level 25 and the ring chain from level 28.

Dungeon quests give more experience than in Classic, but since October 1 the bonus on top of the normal value is cut in half. A Fine Mess still pays the most of the Gnomeregan quests, with Save Techbot’s Brain! next.

Tips & Tricks

Collect your quests before you travel. Alliance quests start across Ironforge, Kharanos, Stormwind, and Darnassus, and Horde quests start in Orgrimmar and Booty Bay, so grabbing them first saves repeat trips. Only the escort and the ring chain start inside.

Finish the Train Depot quests on the way in. Gnogaine and Save Techbot’s Brain! are done outside the instance, before you reach the portal.

Keep the Workshop Key. After a wipe deep inside or on a second run, the back door takes you straight into the Engineering Labs.

Horde players, get the Goblin Transponder before your first run. It saves the long walk through Loch Modan and Dun Morogh every time.

Short on time? Skip Viscous Fallout and Grubbis. Both are optional, and no quest needs them.
