Patch WoW Forever

Overview

Warlock keeps its Classic identity of demons, damage over time, and powerful curses, and Forever gives each tree a clearer finishing move. Two of your Curses become Banes, pets scale with your stats, and Firestones and Spellstones become weapon imbues. Affliction ends in Wrack, Demonology in Demonic Pact, and Destruction in Incinerate, and Bane of Havoc lets Destruction keep damage going on a primary target while it handles lesser foes.

GOOD TO KNOW

Looking for Classic Era advice? Our Classic Warlock Leveling Guide (1-60) covers the Classic leveling talent build and class quests. Forever changes the class itself — two Curses become Banes, Demonic Sacrifice and Ruin are redesigned, and each tree gains a new finishing talent — so its leveling talent picks won’t carry over directly.

What Changed From Classic

Change Details
Banes Curse of Agony and Curse of Doom are now Banes. Only one Bane can be active per Warlock on a single target, separate from the one-Curse limit, and effects that interacted with Curses now also interact with Banes
Curse of the Elements Now applies to all magic damage
Weapon imbues Firestone and Spellstone are now weapon imbues instead of items you equip, and can be active alongside temporary weapon enchantments such as oils
Life Tap Now scales with Spirit
Drain Soul Each tick has a progressively higher chance to grant a Soul Shard, until one is guaranteed
Pets Now scale from their summoner’s stats
Finishing talents Each tree now ends in a new 31-point talent: Wrack in Affliction, Demonic Pact in Demonology, and Incinerate in Destruction
Gold-medal talents A new 16-point tier joins the 11, 21, and 31-point ones: Curse of Exhaustion in Affliction, Fel Domination in Demonology, and Conflagrate in Destruction

Talent Trees

Structure stays Classic-minded: three trees and 51 points at level 60, with one-point gold milestone talents at 11, 21, and 31 points and a new one at 16. Affliction’s are Amplify Curse, Curse of Exhaustion, Siphon Life, and Wrack. Demonology’s are Demonic Sacrifice, Fel Domination, Soul Link, and Demonic Pact. Destruction’s are Shadowburn, Conflagrate, Bane of Havoc, and Incinerate. Many Classic talents were removed, merged, or moved up the tree. Each tree is covered below.

Affliction Warlock Talents

Affliction leans into damage over time and draining. Wrack gives it a powerful channeled spell to use between refreshes, Pandemic lets its damage-over-time effects critically strike harder, and Curse of Exhaustion moves earlier in the tree.

Talent What Changed
Wrack (new, 31-point) Requires Siphon Life. A channeled spell that deals Shadow damage every second and increases the damage the target takes from your other Shadow damage-over-time effects by 10% for 6 seconds
Pandemic (new) Increases the critical strike damage bonus of your Corruption, Bane of Agony, Bane of Doom, Drain Soul, Drain Life, Siphon Life, and Wrack by up to 100%
Soul Siphon (redesigned) Moved to row 5. Increases the damage or health drained by Drain Life, Drain Soul, and Wrack by up to 12% for each of your other Affliction effects on the target, up to 36%
Improved Drains (new) Increases the health drained or damage done by Drain Life, Drain Soul, and Wrack by up to 20%
Curse of Exhaustion (now 16-point) Moved earlier in the tree, and now slows by 30% instead of 10%
Malevolence (new) Increases the critical effect chance of your Shadow spells by up to 5%
Nightfall Now also triggered by Drain Soul and Wrack
Soul Harvest (renamed) Killing a target afflicted by your Drain Soul increases your Mana regeneration for 10 seconds and lets part of it continue while casting

Demonology Warlock Talents

Demonology deepens the link between Warlock and demon. Demonic Knowledge, Demonic Energies, and Master Demonologist reward keeping a demon out, Demonic Sacrifice now lasts 2 hours, and the new Demonic Pact lets you keep a sacrifice and still summon a different demon.

Talent What Changed
Demonic Pact (new, 31-point) Requires Soul Link. Your Demonic Sacrifice effect is no longer cancelled by summoning a different demon, so you can benefit from Demonic Sacrifice and Master Demonologist at once. Resummoning the sacrificed demon still cancels it
Demonic Sacrifice (redesigned, 11-point) Its effects now last 2 hours. The Imp increases Shadow damage, the Voidwalker restores Mana, the Succubus and Incubus increase Fire damage, and the Felhunter restores Health
Demonic Knowledge (new) Increases your spell damage and your demon’s spell damage by up to 100% of your level while you have a demon summoned
Demonic Energies (new) You heal your demon for up to 15% of the spell damage you deal, and when you gain Mana from Life Tap, your demon gains up to 100% of it
Decimation (new) Reduces Soul Fire‘s cooldown by up to 90%. Casting Shadow Bolt or Searing Pain on an enemy below 35% health makes your next Soul Fire faster and free of Soul Shards for 10 seconds
Demonic Brand (new) Your Searing Pain generates less threat and brands the target, so your demon’s next attacks deal extra Fire or Shadow damage. The Shadow version generates high threat
Master Demonologist (redesigned) Each demon now grants a different bonus: the Imp raises Fire damage, the Voidwalker reduces Physical damage taken, the Succubus and Incubus raise Shadow damage, and the Felhunter reduces Magic damage taken

Destruction Warlock Talents

Destruction mixes Shadow and Fire with new tools. Incinerate gives it a strong new Fire spell, Bane of Havoc spreads your damage to a primary target, and Shadow and Flame ties Conflagrate and Shadowburn together. Conflagrate also moves much earlier in the tree.

Talent What Changed
Incinerate (new, 31-point) Requires Bane of Havoc. A 2.5-second Fire spell that deals 25% more damage if the target is afflicted by Immolate
Bane of Havoc (new, 21-point) A 5-minute Bane that makes 15% of all damage you deal to other targets also hit the afflicted target. Limited to 1 target
Conflagrate (now 16-point) Moved up the tree from row 7 to row 4, and now Destruction’s 16-point talent
Shadow and Flame (new) Hitting with Conflagrate raises your Shadow damage, and hitting with Shadowburn raises your Fire damage, for 20 seconds. Each also gets a chance to not consume Immolate or to refund a Soul Shard
Fire and Brimstone (new) Requires Conflagrate. Increases Conflagrate‘s critical strike chance by up to 25%
Aftermath (redesigned) Increases Immolate‘s initial damage by up to 50%, and Conflagrate gets a chance to Daze the target
Ruin Moved up to row 3 and now takes 5 points for the same effect
Improved Shadow Bolt Now only applies to your own Shadow damage, and no longer has charges that can be consumed
Molten Skin (new) Reduces all damage you take by up to 10%

New and Changed Abilities

These are the new and changed baseline abilities every Warlock gets, regardless of talents.

Ability Level What Changed
Summon Incubus 20 New. Summons an Incubus demon. It’s a 10-second cast and costs a Soul Shard
Bane of Agony Existing Renamed and now a Bane. Only one Bane can be active per Warlock on a target
Bane of Doom Existing Renamed and now a Bane, with the same one-Bane limit
Curse of the Elements Existing Now applies to all magic damage
Firestone Existing Now a weapon imbue instead of an item you equip in the off hand. It grants increased Fire damage and critical strike chance, and can be active alongside temporary weapon enchantments
Spellstone Existing Now a weapon imbue instead of an item you equip. It grants increased Shadow damage and spell haste
Life Tap Existing Now scales with Spirit, and its tooltip states the Mana you gain from Spirit
Drain Soul Existing Each tick has a progressive chance to grant a Soul Shard, rising until it’s guaranteed

Race Options

Warlock stays open to Human and Gnome on the Alliance side and Orc and Undead on the Horde side as in Classic Era, with one addition: Troll Warlock, one of the six new race/class combinations confirmed for launch. The Skyborne race can’t play Warlock.

Tips & Tricks

Run a Bane and a Curse together. Banes are limited to one per Warlock on a target, separately from the one-Curse limit, so you can keep Bane of Agony on a target alongside a Curse such as Curse of the Elements.

Pick your demon plan before you pick talents. Demonic Knowledge, Demonic Energies, and Master Demonologist only work with a summoned demon, while Demonic Sacrifice trades the demon for a 2-hour buff and Demonic Pact lets you summon a different one without losing it.

Use Wrack as your Affliction filler. It’s a channeled spell that also boosts your other Shadow damage-over-time effects, so cast it between refreshes of your damage-over-time effects and instant Shadow Bolts from Nightfall.

Save Soul Fire for the execute window as Demonology. Decimation cuts its cooldown by up to 90% and makes it faster and free of Soul Shards after Shadow Bolt or Searing Pain hits an enemy below 35% health.

Put Bane of Havoc on your primary target as Destruction. 15% of all damage you deal to other targets also hits it, so you can keep damage going on the main enemy while you handle lesser foes.

Pair a weapon imbue with a temporary enchantment. Firestone and Spellstone now apply to your weapon and stack with temporary weapon enchantments, so you can run both at once.
