Overview
Retribution Paladin won’t top the meters, but a well-played Ret Paladin pulls real damage and never struggles for a raid spot because of everything it brings on top of that damage. This is a support-DPS hybrid, not a pure damage dealer — play to that strength instead of fighting it.
Read our Protection and Holy guide here.
You’re not a pure DPS class. Blessings, off-healing, and cooldowns like Lay on Hands are part of the job, not a distraction from it. Raids don’t bring Ret Paladins purely for their parse.
Strengths & Weaknesses
- Powerful raid buffs (Blessing of Kings, Salvation, Wisdom)
- Some of the best emergency cooldowns in the game (Lay on Hands, Blessing of Protection, Blessing of Freedom)
- Strong off-healing when your raid needs it
- Very durable — hard to kill in PvP, hard to lose in PvE
- Sustained single-target DPS is genuinely low compared to Warrior, Rogue, or Mage
- Very limited mobility
- A short rotation with a shallow damage toolkit
- Most raids only run one or two Ret Paladins at most
Talents
The standard build spends 31 points in Retribution, 8 points in Protection, and 11 points in Holy — reaching Vengeance and Repentance in Retribution, Precision in Protection, and Consecration plus Divine Strength in Holy.

Key Choices:
- Improved Seal of the Crusader — you’ll rarely use Seal of the Crusader in raids due to the debuff slot it costs, so most players skip these points for Benediction or Improved Retribution Aura instead.
- Precision — drop this once you’re hit-capped from gear (9%) and move the points into Improved Lay on Hands or Spiritual Focus for better off-healing.
Stat Priority
- 1
- Hit Rating
9% to never miss a raid boss, or 6% from gear if you took Precision. Missed attacks don’t proc Vengeance, which cripples your whole rotation.
- 2
- Strength
every point gives 2 Attack Power.
- 3
- Attack Power
scales your auto-attacks, Seal of Command procs, and Judgement.
- 4
- Weapon Speed
Seal of Command caps at 7 procs per minute, so a slower weapon (3.5+ speed) gets more value per proc.
- 5
- Critical Strike
crits trigger Vengeance procs, so this carries real secondary value.
Match your seal to your weapon speed: slow weapon → Seal of Command, fast weapon → Seal of Righteousness. Using the wrong seal for your weapon is a straightforward, avoidable DPS loss.

Tips & Tricks
Get hit-capped before anything else: This is the single biggest DPS loss for new Ret Paladins. Fix it before chasing any other upgrade.
Don’t spam Consecration outside Vengeance procs: You’ll go oom and do less damage overall — time it to procs specifically.
Don’t ignore your utility kit: Blessings, off-heals, and cooldowns are part of your job, not a tax on your damage.
Watch your mana: Running dry mid-fight tanks your damage far more than downranking your spells would have.
