Overview

Blackrock Depths is the largest 5-player dungeon in Classic, full stop — a sprawling Dark Iron dwarf city with more than a dozen named bosses spread across several distinct sections. A real full clear can take 4-6 hours, which means most groups treat it as a series of targeted runs rather than one continuous session.

Blackrock Depths isn’t just a leveling dungeon — it’s directly tied to your eventual Molten Core raid. Two bosses here, Fineous Darkvire and Lord Incendius, are connected to Molten Core’s attunement process, and the dungeon also houses the Black Forge and Black Anvil needed for Dark Iron smithing.

Dungeon Sections

Section What’s There
Detention Block High Interrogator Gerstahn; prisoners you can free for quest objectives
Ring of Law Houndmaster Grebmar, Lord Roccor, and a rotating arena boss tied to the Shadowforge Key chain
The Vault Fineous Darkvire and Lord Incendius — both attunement-relevant
Shrine of Thaurissan area Where the Shadowforge Key chain concludes
The Grim Guzzler A functioning tavern housing Plugger Spazzring — stealing ale or attacking anyone here aggros the entire bar
The Lyceum → Emperor’s Seat Golem Lord Argelmach, Magmus, Princess Moira Bronzebeard, and the final boss, Emperor Dagran Thaurissan

Boss Quick Reference

Boss Key Mechanic Priority
Fineous Darkvire Drops the Ironfel, required for the Shadowforge Key chain See our Shadowforge Key guide for the full walkthrough
Lord Incendius Marks the starting point for the Molten Core attunement’s “lava run” toward the Core Fragment Relevant even if you’re not farming this dungeon for loot
General Angerforge Summons numerous low-health adds, applies a stacking Sunder Armor Clear adds efficiently; his damage output is manageable with steady tanking
Ribbly Screwspigot Optional, unique turn-in mechanic tied to a specific quest Skip if you’re not actively completing that quest
Panzor the Invincible (rare) Random spawn, not guaranteed to appear Bonus encounter if present, not worth waiting around for
Princess Moira Bronzebeard Optional secondary target alongside the Emperor; heals him if left alive See Critical Mechanics — kill priority matters here
Emperor Dagran Thaurissan Final boss; periodically rages, becoming immune to crowd control See Critical Mechanics for the full room-clear and phase breakdown
NOTE

This table covers the dungeon’s most mechanically significant encounters, not every named boss. Blackrock Depths has 16 or more distinct fights in total — several are straightforward tank and spanks that don’t need dedicated callouts here.

Critical Mechanics

Emperor Dagran Thaurissan and Princess Moira — clear the room first

Both are pulled simultaneously, and the fight has two real phases. Kill or crowd-control Moira first — she’s a priest capable of healing herself and the Emperor, and leaving her free turns this into a much longer fight than it needs to be. The Emperor also periodically enters a rage state, becoming immune to crowd control and hitting significantly harder. Clear every non elite add in the room before engaging — if you’re forced to kite during the rage phase, leftover adds will join the fight.

Fineous Darkvire and Lord Incendius

Neither fight is mechanically dangerous on its own, but both matter well beyond this dungeon. Fineous Darkvire drops the Ironfel, the item that completes the Shadowforge Key chain — see our full walkthrough for the details. Lord Incendius marks the starting point of the “lava run” toward Molten Core’s Core Fragment, used during that raid’s attunement process.

Notable Loot

Boss Notable Drops
Emperor Dagran Thaurissan Ironfoe, Hand of Justice

Hand of Justice used to drop from General Angerforge earlier in Classic’s history — it’s since moved to Emperor Thaurissan’s loot table specifically. If you’re reading an older guide that points to Angerforge for it, that information is outdated.

Quests

Blackrock Depths carries a large quest list, spanning multiple sections of the dungeon and both factions. We’ve given it a full dedicated breakdown rather than trying to fit it here — see our complete Blackrock Depths Quests Guide for the details.

Tips & Tricks

Plan targeted runs rather than a full clear. With 4-6 hours needed for everything, most groups are better served picking a specific goal — a particular boss, a specific quest chain, the Shadowforge Key — rather than attempting the whole dungeon in one sitting.

Don’t engage anyone in the Grim Guzzler unless you mean to. Stealing ale or attacking any single patron pulls the entire tavern at once — a mistake that can wipe an unprepared group instantly.

Bring real crowd control for the Emperor fight specifically. Moira’s healing and the Emperor’s rage phase both punish groups without a reliable way to lock down a target.

Consider your attunement goals before you enter. If Molten Core or the Shadowforge Key matter to you, route your run through Lord Incendius and Fineous Darkvire specifically, rather than treating them as incidental stops.
