Patch Classic WoW

Overview

Scarlet Monastery isn’t one dungeon — it’s four separate instanced wings sharing a single entrance, each with its own bosses, loot, and level range. It’s one of the most content-dense stops in Classic’s leveling journey, and one of the few dungeons you’ll realistically return to multiple times across a 20level span rather than outgrowing in a single visit.

GOOD TO KNOW

Two of the four wings — Armory and Cathedral — are locked behind The Scarlet Key, found in a chest behind Arcanist Doan, the final Library boss. You cannot access those wings until you’ve cleared Library at least once.

Wing Structure and Level Ranges

Wing Level Range Key Required Bosses
Graveyard 26-36 No Interrogator Vishas, Bloodmage Thalnos
Library 29-39 No Houndmaster Loksey, Arcanist Doan
Armory 32-42 Yes (The Scarlet Key) Herod
Cathedral 35-45 Yes (The Scarlet Key) High Inquisitor Fairbanks (optional), Scarlet Commander Mograine, High Inquisitor Whitemane

The entrance is in the northeast corner of Tirisfal Glades. Inside the main building, four portals lead to each wing — left to right: Graveyard, Cathedral, Armory, Library. Horde players reach it easily from Undercity; Alliance players typically approach through Silverpine Forest from Hillsbrad Foothills.

Boss Quick Reference

Boss Wing Key Mechanic Priority
Interrogator Vishas Graveyard Accompanied by multiple adds Mark and prioritize adds; CC where possible
Bloodmage Thalnos Graveyard Final boss, housed in the tomb at the dungeon’s end Straightforward fight following a fully linear path
Houndmaster Loksey Library Buffs his dog adds with Bloodlust if left uncontrolled CC the adds before engaging, or kill the dogs fast if not
Arcanist Doan Library Arcane Explosion and Silence, both melee-range AoE; a fire warning shout Ranged and healers stay at distance; run when he shouts about righteous fire
Herod Armory Immune to damage during his Whirlwind, which also deals heavy AoE Melee step back during Whirlwind; expect a large add wave immediately after his death
High Inquisitor Fairbanks Cathedral Optional, hidden behind a secret door Easy fight, weak loot — skip freely
Scarlet Commander Mograine & High Inquisitor Whitemane Cathedral Two-phase fight; Whitemane’s Scarlet Resurrection revives Mograine mid encounter See Critical Mechanics — kill order matters here

Critical Mechanics

Arcanist Doan — Arcane Explosion and Silence. Both effects only hit players in melee range. Ranged DPS and your healer specifically should stay well back — a mistimed Silence on your healer during a damage spike is a common, avoidable wipe.

Herod — the Whirlwind immunity trap. While Whirlwind is active, Herod cannot be damaged and deals heavy area damage to anyone nearby. Melee should disengage briefly rather than continuing to attack into it. After he dies, a large wave of Scarlet Crusaders storms the room — give your tank a moment to establish threat before anyone uses AoE.

Mograine and Whitemane — the resurrection phase. This fight starts as a fairly ordinary Mograine tank-and-spank while Whitemane casts Smite from range. At some point, she casts Scarlet Resurrection, reviving Mograine mid-fight — this is the real test. Your tank needs to reclaim Mograine’s threat immediately, since a resurrected Mograine left unchecked can kill your DPS or healer fast. Kill Whitemane first once she resurrects him; she has low health as a caster-type boss. Then finish Mograine for good. Save your healer’s mana for this phase rather than spending it early.

Notable Loot

Wing Notable Drops
Graveyard Torturing Poker, Ironspine’s Eye, Embalmed Shroud
Library The Scarlet Key (required for Armory and Cathedral access)
Cathedral Scarlet Leggings, Aegis of the Scarlet Commander, Hand of Righteousness, Triune Amulet, Whitemane’s Chapeau

Quests

Scarlet Monastery’s quest structure is honestly more involved than most dungeons, spread across several separate chains rather than one linear sequence.

Quest Level Pickup Objective
Brother Anton Brother Crowley, Stormwind Cathedral of Light Starts a chain through Desolace and Hillsbrad Foothills, culminating in “In the Name of the Light”
In the Name of the Light 34 End of the Brother Anton chain Defeat bosses across three of the four Scarlet Monastery wings
Hearts of Zeal 30 Master Apothecary Faranell, Undercity (after prerequisite) Collect 20 Heart of Zeal, dropped by Scarlet enemies outside the dungeon
Into the Scarlet Monastery 33 Varimathras, Undercity Completed inside the instance
Vorrel’s Revenge 25 Monika Sengutz, Tarren Mill Requires an item dropped by a named mob in Alterac Mountains, not inside the dungeon
GOOD TO KNOW

Two quest items — Compendium of the Fallen and Mythology of the Titans — are books found on the way to Arcanist Doan in the Library, not drops from a specific mob. Keep an eye on bookshelves and hallway floors as you clear toward him.

Tips & Tricks

Get your quests before you start clearing. With this many separate chains spread across multiple zones, walking in unprepared means either backtracking later or missing objectives entirely.

Don’t skip Library even if you only want Armory or Cathedral loot. The Scarlet Key is mandatory, not optional — there’s no way around clearing Library at least once first.

Pull carefully in the Cathedral specifically. Fleeing humanoids here can drag in large additional groups more easily than in the other wings — use line of sight and controlled pulls rather than charging into open rooms.

Skip Fairbanks unless you’re going for full completion. His loot doesn’t justify the detour, and he’s easy to miss without consequence.
