Overview
Unlike some classes with separate raid-viable specs, Warlock’s top raid DPS build in Classic pulls from two trees at once rather than committing purely to Affliction, Destruction, or Demonology. The standard build sacrifices your pet for a flat damage bonus, then leans on Destruction’s crit-doubling talent to make Shadow Bolt hit as hard as possible. Affliction exists as a real, strong choice too, but it’s more commonly the leveling and solo spec than the default raid pick.
This guide covers the standard raid DPS build — a Demonology/Destruction hybrid built around sacrificing your pet for bonus damage. If you’re leveling or playing solo, a DoT-focused Affliction build is a genuinely strong and more comfortable alternative worth researching separately.
Strengths & Weaknesses
- Unmatched raid utility — Healthstones, Soulstones, summoning, and curses nobody else brings
- Critical Strike scales unusually well thanks to Ruin doubling crit damage
- Strong, simple rotation once you understand the priority list
- A real toolkit for both PvE and PvP without needing to fully respec
- Slow, steady damage rather than burst — no real AoE farming tool like a Mage has
- Cloth armor and heavy reliance on your Voidwalker for survivability outside of raids
- Soul Shard management is a constant, real chore that eats bag space and time
- The optimal raid build sacrifices your pet, losing some of the class’s signature utility mid-fight
Talents
The standard raid build is commonly called Demonic Sacrifice + Ruin — enough Demonology investment to reach
Demonic Sacrifice with the bulk of remaining points pushed deep into Destruction to reach
Ruin, which doubles your critical strike damage on Destruction spells. A handful of points round out Affliction for hit chance and mana efficiency talents.

Key Choices:
Demonic Sacrifice — the core of this build. Most of the Demonology talents you skip along the way exist only to strengthen your pet, which becomes irrelevant once you sacrifice it for the buff.
Ruin — doubles your critical strike bonus damage on Destruction spells specifically. Since Shadow Bolt is your primary filler, this is where most of the build’s damage gain comes from.
Fel Domination — useful as an emergency tool. Quickly resummon a Voidwalker and sacrifice it again for a large defensive shield if your health gets dangerously low.
Suppression — worth a couple of points for the hit chance it provides, especially before your gear covers the cap on its own.
Stat Priority
- 1
- Hit Rating
16% to the raid boss hit cap. Early on, your gear likely won’t get you there, and that’s normal — prioritize what’s available and keep pushing toward it as you gear up.
- 2
- Critical Strike
unusually valuable for this build specifically, since Ruin doubles your crit damage on Destruction spells. A single point of crit rating is worth more to you than to most other casters.
- 3
- Spell Damage
scales your direct damage output, particularly Shadow Bolt.
- 4
- Intellect
expands your mana pool, which matters given how much sustained casting this rotation demands.
Don’t panic about hit cap early. You probably won’t reach 16% hit until well into your gearing process, and that’s expected, not a sign you’re doing something wrong.
Rotation
OPENER
- 1.
or your assigned curse — apply before engaging if you’re responsible for it.
- 2.
apply your DoT immediately if you’re allowed to maintain it on this target.
- 3.
begin your primary damage rotation.
PRIORITY
- 1.
Maintain your assigned curse on the target throughout the fight.
- 2.
keep it active if you’re permitted to maintain DoTs on this particular fight (some raid assignments restrict this to preserve debuff slots).
- 3.
your primary, repeated filler spell for the rest of the fight.
- 4.
Use cooldowns
at the start of combat rather than saving them, so you get a second (and on long fights, a third) use before the encounter ends.
AOE
- 1.
exists but costs significant mana for modest returns — treat multi-target situations as an opportunity to apply Corruption or
Curse of Agony to several targets rather than expecting real burst AoE damage.
Consumables
- Flask
The strongest spell damage flask available for progression nights
- Elixir
+35 spell damage for 1 hour — budget alternative to the Flask
- Elixir
Shadow specific spell damage boost, directly benefiting Shadow Bolt
- Potion
Keep a full stack; this rotation demands sustained casting
Gear
Prioritize hit cap progress first, then lean into Critical Strike harder than you would on most other casters, given how much Ruin amplifies its value. Spell Damage and Intellect round out the rest of your itemization.
- Weapon
Any weapon or stat stick with Spell Damage
Intellect heavy alternatives if Spell Damage options are scarce
- Trinket
Critical Strike or Spell Damage proc trinkets
Straightforward Intellect trinkets
- Chest/Robe
High Spell Damage cloth pieces

Tips & Tricks
Use your utility — it’s a real part of your value, not a distraction from DPS.
Healthstones for the raid,
Soulstones for battle ressing a healer, and Curse of Elements or
Curse of Recklessness for raid wide damage buffs are all contributions on top of your personal damage.
Don’t lose your Voidwalker carelessly outside of raid. Once you’ve sacrificed it for
Demonic Sacrifice‘s buff during a fight, you’re fragile without it — be mindful of when you’re actually protected and when you’re not.
Manage Soul Shards proactively, not reactively. Running out mid raid because you didn’t farm ahead of time is a completely avoidable problem.
Pop your cooldowns. Popping them at the start of a fight rather than saving them for the right moment usually nets you an extra use over the course of a long encounter.
