Overview

The Glowing Shard is the only quest that actually starts inside Wailing Caverns itself, dropped by the final boss. It leads into a short but complete chain spanning three different NPCs across two zones, ending in a real reward choice.

The Glowing Shard doesn’t drop every time — most sources put the chance somewhere between 60% and 68%. If Mutanus doesn’t drop it on your first kill, you’ll need to come back another time.

Step One: Sputtervalve

Step Action
1 Defeat Mutanus the Devourer, the final boss of Wailing Caverns.
2 Loot the Glowing Shard, if it drops.
3 Travel to Ratchet and find Sputtervalve, located near the flight master under a canopy.
4 Speak to him — he directs you toward Falla Sagewind.

Step Two: Falla Sagewind

Falla Sagewind isn’t found in a town — she’s a tauren standing on top of the very mountain that Wailing Caverns is built into, north of Lushwater Oasis in the Barrens.

Turning in to Falla Sagewind completes The Glowing Shard and immediately hands you the follow up quest In Nightmares — there’s no separate trip required to pick it up.

Completing In Nightmares

Faction Turn-In Location
Horde Archdruid Hamuul Runetotem — In Nightmares Thunder Bluff, Elder Rise
Alliance Mathrengyl Bearwalker — In Nightmares Darnassus

Completing In Nightmares rewards your choice of Talbar Mantle, a cloth shoulder piece, or Quagmire Galoshes, a pair of mail boots. Pick whichever actually fits your class and current gear rather than defaulting to one or the other.

Tips & Tricks

Don’t assume the shard is guaranteed on your first Mutanus kill. With a drop rate well under 100%, plan for the possibility of a second attempt.

Turn in to Falla Sagewind before heading back down the mountain. Since she’s literally on top of the dungeon’s own mountain, it’s a short trip worth doing immediately rather than putting off for later.

Check both reward options before choosing. Talbar Mantle and Quagmire Galoshes serve very different gear slots — decide based on what your character actually needs, not just which sounds better.

Alliance and Horde players finish this chain in completely different cities. Don’t expect a shared turn-in location — plan your travel accordingly once you have “In Nightmares” active.
