Patch Classic WoW

Overview

Stratholme is a ruined human city split into two distinct halves, each with its own final boss and its own separate completion credit. Between both sides, this is one of the largest dungeons in Classic, and most groups treat the two halves as fully separate runs rather than one continuous clear.

If you’re here for Deathcharger’s Reins specifically, you’re in the right place, but the path to Baron Rivendare requires real preparation first. See our full Deathcharger’s Reins guide for the complete walkthrough.

Living Side vs. Undead Side

Which side you’re credited for depends entirely on which entrance you use. The main gate leads to the Living Side, controlled by the Scarlet Crusade and ending in Balnazzar. The service entrance leads to the Undead Side, ending in Baron Rivendare. You can explore either side regardless of entrance, but you only earn completion credit for the side matching your final boss kill.

Killing Magistrate Barthilas on the Living Side drops the Key to the City. This key lets your group access the Undead Side directly through the service entrance on future runs, rather than needing to clear through the Living Side first every time.

Critical Mechanics

The three Ash’ari Crystals gate access to Baron Rivendare

You cannot reach the Slaughter Square area, where Rivendare waits, until all three Crystalguarding bosses — Baroness Anastari, Nerub’enkan, and Maleki the Pallid — are defeated. Plan your Undead Side route around clearing all three rather than trying to rush past them.

Ramstein the Gorger won’t appear until the room is cleared

He’s drawn out specifically by killing the surrounding Venom Belchers and Bile Spewers in Slaughter Square — pulling randomly without clearing first just means the room stays populated with adds you’ll need to deal with anyway.

Quests

Stratholme carries a quest list spanning both sides and connecting into Eastern Plaguelands more broadly, including a chain that rewards an actual weapon choice. See our complete Stratholme Quests Guide for the full breakdown.

Tips & Tricks

Decide which side you’re running before you start. Since completion credit depends on your entrance, confirm your group’s actual goal — Living Side, Undead Side, or both across separate runs — before you commit to a route.

Get the Key to the City on your first Living Side visit. It saves real time on every future Undead Side run by letting you skip straight to the service entrance instead of clearing through Living Side content you don’t need.

Clear each Crystal boss’s surrounding area fully. All three are real roadblocks to Baron Rivendare, not optional detours — there’s no way to skip past them to the final boss.

Treat this as two separate dungeons for planning purposes. Most groups don’t attempt a full clear of both sides in one sitting, and there’s no real downside to splitting it across multiple runs.
