Patch Classic WoW

Overview

Hunter is Classic’s premier ranged DPS class — a simple, low-execution-difficulty raid rotation built almost entirely around Auto Shot, with a pet doing meaningful supplemental damage on top. What makes Hunter genuinely interesting isn’t the raid rotation itself, which is one of the simplest in the game, but everything around it: pet taming, pet management, and a leveling experience built completely differently from every other class.

GOOD TO KNOW

Your raid rotation and your leveling rotation are almost completely different. While leveling, Serpent Sting and Arcane Shot are core parts of your damage. In raids, you drop both — they’re magic damage that doesn’t scale with your gear the way physical shots do, and Serpent Sting isn’t worth one of the raid’s only 16 debuff slots.

Strengths & Weaknesses

STRENGHTS
  • One of the simplest, most consistent raid rotations in the game
  • Incredible leveling and soloing power thanks to pet tanking
  • Pulls and controls trash pacing better than almost any other class
  • A wolf pet’s Furious Howl provides real raid-wide Attack Power value
  • Very low execution difficulty relative to its damage output
WEAKNESSES
  • Contests loot with Warriors and Rogues without out-damaging an equally skilled one
  • Genuinely mana-constrained in raids without reliable regen tools
  • “Clipping” your Auto Shot with a poorly-timed Aimed Shot is a real, easy-to-make DPS loss
  • Pet management (reviving, positioning, Growl toggling) is real overhead other classes don’t have

Talents

The standard raid build spends 31 points in Beast Mastery and 20 points in Marksmanship, maximizing pet damage and survivability while still reaching key Marksmanship talents that boost Aimed Shot.

Key Choices:

  • Beast Mastery depth — boosts your pet’s damage and survivability directly, which matters more in a raid setting than it might seem, since your pet is a real chunk of your total output.
  • Lethal Shots (Marksmanship) — a crit-focused talent that makes Critical Strike a real secondary priority stat, not just a nice-to-have.

Stat Priority

  • 1
  • Hit Rating
  • 9% to the hit cap against raid bosses. Missed shots are wasted damage and wasted Auto Shot timing.

  • 2
  • Agility
  • your primary stat, contributing to Attack Power, Critical Strike, and Armor all at once.

  • 3
  • Critical Strike
  • genuinely strong thanks to Lethal Shots scaling off it directly.

  • 4
  • Intellect
  • expands your mana pool. Hunters don’t have reliable in-combat mana regen without Viper Sting, which isn’t raid-viable, so a bigger pool matters more than it does for some other mana users.

NOTE

Ranged weapon upgrades are almost always your single best gear upgrade. Most of your damage comes from Auto Shot, so a better bow or gun outweighs stat upgrades elsewhere on your character more often than you’d expect.

Rotation

OPENER

  • 1.
  • Hunter’s Mark

  • apply to the target immediately; it’s a real Attack Power debuff worth maintaining throughout the fight.

  • 3.
  • Aimed Shot

    Multi-Shot

  • your only two special attacks in a raid setting, depending on whether it’s single-target or a pack.

PRIORITY

  • 1.
  • Auto Shot

  • never let Auto Shot sit idle — it’s the backbone of your damage, and everything else is built around not interrupting it.

  • 2.
  • Aimed Shot

  • use between Auto Shots, but time it carefully. Casting too close to your next Auto Shot “clips” that shot and costs you damage — use weapons with 3.0+ attack speed and cast Aimed Shot immediately after an Auto Shot fires to avoid this.

  • 3.
  • Watch your mana

  • the goal is to end the fight at or near 0 mana, not to run dry mid-fight. Drop Multi-Shot to a lower rank if you’re burning through mana too fast.

AOE

  • 1.
  • Multi-Shot

  • your primary AoE tool against grouped targets.

  • 2.
  • Growl

  • keep pet off in raids and dungeons — it’s meant for solo leveling, and leaving it on in a group setting will pull threat off your tank.

Consumables

Gear

Prioritize ranged weapon upgrades above almost everything else — bows and guns with strong DPS, attack speed, and weapon damage matter more than raw stat sticks. Once your weapon is solid, chase Agility and Critical Strike on the rest of your gear.

  • Ranged Weapon
  • Highest-DPS bow or gun available to you, 3.0+ speed

  • Any upgrade over your current ranged weapon, even a small one

  • Pet
  • Wolf with Furious Howl (Rank 4 requires Bloodaxe Worg, Lower Blackrock Spire)

  • Any pet with strong DPS and survivability for your content

  • Trinket
  • Agility or Attack Power proc trinkets

  • Straightforward stat trinkets

Learn to avoid clipping: Casting Aimed Shot at the wrong moment costs you an entire Auto Shot. This is the single biggest skill gap between an average Hunter and a great one.

Manage your pet’s threat separately from your own: Use Cower to reduce your pet’s threat in raid settings, and keep Growl off entirely outside of solo content.

Don’t use Serpent Sting or Arcane Shot in raids: It feels counterintuitive coming from leveling, where both are core to your damage (Serpent Sting, Arcane Shot), but neither scales well enough or is worth the debuff slot at level 60 raid content.

Consider Engineering: It’s widely regarded as one of the best profession picks for Hunters specifically, offering unique utility that pairs well with a ranged playstyle.
