Patch Classic WoW

Overview

Fire is the highest-damage Mage spec in Classic — full stop — as long as your target isn’t fire-immune or fire-resistant. That caveat matters more than it sounds like it should: most Molten Core and Blackwing Lair bosses resist fire outright, which is why Frost is the default raid spec for most of early Classic. Fire earns its place once your raid moves into content where that resistance stops being a problem.

GOOD TO KNOW

Fire has a genuinely different skill floor than Frost. Frost’s rotation is close to one button on repeat; Fire demands you track Scorch stacks, time Combustion, and maintain Ignite uptime constantly. Lower skill floor for Frost, higher skill ceiling for Fire — pick based on how much attention you want to give your rotation.

Strengths & Weaknesses

STRENGHTS
  • The highest Mage DPS spec in the game against non-fire-resistant targets
  • Genuinely engaging, active rotation compared to Frost’s simplicity
  • Ignite scales extremely well with gear and raid buffs over the course of a fight
  • High damage ceiling rewards a skilled, attentive player
WEAKNESSES
  • Completely countered by fire resistance and immunity — useless in Molten Core and most of Blackwing Lair
  • Generates enormous threat, demanding constant threat-meter awareness
  • More mana-hungry than Frost, with real consumable costs to sustain
  • Punishing to play poorly — mistakes translate directly into lost DPS in a way Frost’s simpler rotation doesn’t

Talents

The standard Fire build spends most of its points deep in the Fire tree to reach Combustion, with a smaller investment in Arcane and a few points in Frost for hit chance and utility. This build maximizes Ignite, Fire Power, and Critical Mass — the three talents that make Fire hit as hard as it does.

Key Choices:

  • Ignite — your single most important talent. Every critical strike applies 40% of that hit’s damage as a 4-second DoT, and it refreshes and grows with additional crits.
  • Improved Scorch — stacks a Fire Vulnerability debuff up to 5 times, increasing fire damage taken by 15% on the target. This benefits every Fire Mage in the raid, not just you, so maintaining it is a shared responsibility.
  • Combustion — a 3-minute cooldown that stacks +10% crit chance per Fire spell hit until you land 3 crits. Time this around your opener and any burst windows your raid calls for.
  • Arcane Subtlety — reduces threat generation by 40%. Given how much threat Fire produces, this is close to mandatory rather than optional.

Stat Priority

  • 1
  • Hit Rating
  • the spell hit cap against level 63 raid bosses is 16%. Missed spells don’t crit, don’t apply Ignite, and do zero damage — get here before anything else.

  • 2
  • Critical Strike
  • the single most important stat after hit, since crits are what trigger Ignite. Multiple Fire talents (Ignite, Critical Mass, Fire Power, Combustion) all interact with crit chance directly.

  • 3
  • Spell Damage
  • scales your direct damage and the Ignite DoT that follows every crit.

  • 4
  • Intellect
  • expands your mana pool, which matters given Fire’s mana intensity.

NOTE

Stack Critical Strike harder than you’d expect from a generic “spell damage first” instinct. Fire’s entire damage identity runs through Ignite, and Ignite only exists because of crits.

Rotation

OPENER

  • 1.
  • Scorch

  • cast until you have 5 Improved Scorch stacks on the target, if you’re the Scorch-assigned Mage.

  • 2.
  • Pyroblast

  • your hardest-hitting cast, timed to apply your strongest possible Ignite.

  • 3.
  • Combustion

  • pop immediately after Pyroblast lands for guaranteed early crit stacking.

PRIORITY

  • 1.
  • Scorch

  • maintain Improved Scorch stacks — never let the 5-stack debuff fall off if you’re responsible for it.

  • 2.
  • Fireball

  • your primary filler and sustained damage spell between Scorch refreshes.

  • 3.
  • Watch your threat meter constantly

  • stop casting briefly if you’re approaching tank threat.

Consumables

  • Flask
  • Flask of Supreme Power

  • +150 spell damage for 2 hours, persists through death

  • Elixir
  • Greater Arcane Elixir

  • +35 spell damage for 1 hour — budget alternative to the Flask

  • Potion
  • Major Mana Potion

  • Fire burns mana fast; keep a full stack

  • Weapon Buff
  • Brilliant Wizard Oil

  • Oil+36 spell damage and +1% spell crit

  • Situational
  • Limited Invulnerability Potion

  • Keep on hand as a threat-emergency panic button

Gear

Prioritize hit cap first, then chase Critical Strike more aggressively than you would on Frost — it’s directly feeding your core damage mechanic, not just a nice-to-have secondary stat.

  • Trinket
  • Critical Strike or spell damage proc trinkets

  • Any strong spell damage trinket

  • Chest
  • Robe of the Archmage

  • Any comparable raid-drop chest piece

  • Weapon Enchant
  • Enchant Weapon – Spell Power

  • Whatever your best available option is at your gear stage

Tips & Tricks

Never bring Fire to Molten Core or Blackwing Lair: The fire resistance on those bosses guts your damage. Respec to Frost, or keep a Frost offspec, for that content specifically.

Coordinate Scorch duty: Decide with your fellow Mages who’s maintaining Improved Scorch before the pull — don’t leave it to chance mid-fight.

Watch threat religiously: Fire generates threat fast enough that it’s a real, constant concern, not an occasional edge case. Use a threat meter addon and back off before you pull aggro.

Don’t panic if you’re not Fire-specced yet: Frost is genuinely the better choice through most of early raiding. Fire is a later-game payoff, not a spec you need to rush into on day one.
