Overview
Frost isn’t the highest-damage Mage spec in a vacuum — Fire eventually out-scales it. But Frost is the spec you actually raid with for most of Classic, because most Molten Core and Blackwing Lair bosses carry meaningful fire resistance or outright immunity. Frost doesn’t have that problem, and its rotation is refreshingly simple to execute well.
You play Frost because of how the fights are built, not because it’s inherently the strongest school of magic. Fire becomes the stronger raw damage spec once your raid moves past the fire-resistant tiers — that’s a separate guide and a separate respec.
Strengths & Weaknesses
- The default raid spec for Molten Core, Blackwing Lair, and most of AQ40
- Simple, reliable rotation with very little execution difficulty
- Strong personal survivability via Ice Barrier, Frost Nova, and Blink
- Winter’s Chill lets multiple Frost Mages stack a real raid-wide crit buff
- The best leveling spec for Mage thanks to Frost Nova + Blizzard AoE grinding
- Lower damage ceiling than a fully geared Fire Mage in fire-vulnerable content
- Mana-hungry rotation that demands real consumable investment
- Not a spec you switch into for the biggest numbers — you play it because the encounter design forces it
- Deep utility builds sacrifice personal damage for raid-wide buffs
Talents
There are two standard raid builds. The 31/0/20 Arcane/Frost hybrid puts most points into Arcane for Arcane Power and Presence of Mind, with just enough Frost investment for core damage talents — this is the damage-focused build most Frost Mages should run. The 17/0/34 Deep Frost build sacrifices personal damage for Winter’s Chill, a stacking crit debuff that benefits the whole raid — most raids only need one Mage running this.

Key Choices:
- Winter’s Chill — only worth the deep investment if you’re the raid’s designated support Mage; everyone else should run the Arcane/Frost hybrid for personal damage.
- Arcane Power + Presence of Mind — the core burst combo for the hybrid build; use them together for a big damage window.
Stat Priority
- 1
- Hit Rating
missed spells deal zero damage. Get to the spell hit cap before chasing anything else.
- 2
- Spell Damage
your main damage-scaling stat once hit-capped.
- 3
- Intellect
expands your mana pool and contributes to crit chance.
- 4
- Critical Strike
good on its own, and helps stack Winter’s Chill if a deep-Frost Mage is running it.
Don’t assume you need Deep Frost just because you’re “playing Frost Mage.” Unless your raid leader specifically asks you to be the Winter’s Chill Mage, run the Arcane/Frost hybrid for your own damage.

Tips & Tricks
Don’t play Fire in Molten Core or Blackwing Lair: Most bosses there resist or outright ignore fire damage. Save Fire for content past those tiers.
Only one Mage needs Deep Frost: Everyone else should be maximizing personal damage with the Arcane/Frost hybrid instead.
Don’t skip consumables: Even with great gear, an unbuffed Frost Mage leaves a large chunk of damage on the table.
Respec when your raid moves on: Frost is the right call early, not forever — don’t stay Frost out of habit once your guild clears past the fire-resistant tiers.
