Patch Classic WoW

Overview

The Skeleton Key is what actually opens Scholomance’s locked door, and getting one is a four zone undertaking — Western Plaguelands, Tanaris, Un’Goro Crater, and back again. This is one of the longest item chains in Classic, spanning nine total steps if you count the optional opening breadcrumb. Both factions follow a nearidentical path, though the very first step differs meaningfully depending on which side you’re playing.

GOOD TO KNOW

If your group has a Rogue with high Lockpicking or an Engineer carrying the right explosive, you can skip this entire chain and bypass the door directly. Worth checking before anyone commits real time to farming a key nobody actually needs — this chain is long enough that skipping it entirely, when possible, is a time saver.

Step One: Prove Yourself

Faction Quest Objective
Alliance Clear the Way Kill 10 Skeletal Flayers and 10 Slavering Ghouls at Sorrow Hill, given by Commander Ashlam Valorfist at Chillwind Camp
Horde Scarlet Diversions Burn down the Scarlet Crusade’s command tent between Felstone Field and Dalson’s Tears using a provided Flame in a Bottle, then plant a Scourge Banner to frame them for it, given by High Executor Derrington at The Bulwark

An optional breadcrumb quest, A Call to Arms: The Plaguelands!, can send you to the right starting NPC if you haven’t already found Chillwind Camp or The Bulwark. It’s not required — you can walk straight up to either NPC and start the chain without it, but it’s a helpful signpost if you’re not sure where either location actually is.

From here, both factions follow the same shared path, just through different named NPCs along the way.

Step Quest Objective
2 All Along the Watchtowers Mark all four towers of Andorhal using a provided Beacon Torch, fighting off defenders at each one
3 Scholomance A short dialogue quest that hands you off to the key-crafter — Alchemist Arbington for Alliance, Apothecary Dithers for Horde
4 Skeletal Fragments Collect 15 Skeletal Fragments from skeletons around Andorhal
5 Mold Rhymes With… Bring the Imbued Skeletal Fragments and 15 gold to Krinkle Goodsteel, a goblin blacksmith in Gadgetzan, Tanaris
6 Fire Plume Forged Take the Skeleton Key Mold and 2 Thorium Bar to Fire Plume Ridge in Un’Goro Crater, and forge the key blank using the lava there

Araj’s Scarab

The key blank isn’t complete without one more piece. Araj the Summoner is a lich ruling the ruins of Andorhal, and he carries a signet in the shape of a scarab — the actual piece that becomes the head of your finished key. It’s a fitting final obstacle for a chain that’s already asked you to prove yourself repeatedly across four different zones. The Araj’s Scarab quest is what tracks this specific step.

NOTE

Araj isn’t a solo pushover. Taking him down realistically means gathering a real group, not just showing up alone expecting an easy kill. He’s surrounded by a real number of minions before you ever reach him directly, so plan this step the way you’d plan any other group objective, not as a quick errand.

The Final Turn-In

Return the scarab to whichever NPC has guided you through the chain — Arbington for Alliance, Dithers for Horde. Completing The Key to Scholomance finishes the process on the spot, handing you the finished Skeleton Key. It’s a quiet ending for a chain that’s asked so much along the way, but the key itself is worth every step once you’re actually standing in front of Scholomance’s locked door with it in hand.

Tips & Tricks

Check for a Lockpicking Rogue or Seaforium carrying Engineer before you start. This chain is long enough that confirming nobody in your group can just bypass the door saves real time.

Treat Araj’s Scarab as a group objective from the start. Don’t head out solo assuming it’ll be quick — bring people, the same way you would for any other elite mob.

Do the four zone travel deliberately, not reactively. Between Western Plaguelands, Gadgetzan, and Un’Goro Crater, this chain covers real distance. Plan your route rather than bouncing back and forth inefficiently, especially since some steps require returning to the same NPC more than once.

Don’t skip the optional breadcrumb if you’re not sure where to start. “A Call to Arms: The Plaguelands!” exists specifically to point new players toward the right NPC — there’s no downside to picking it up first.
