Patch Classic WoW

Overview

Scholomance is a necromancer’s academy built into the crypts beneath Caer Darrow, and it’s every bit as dangerous as that description suggests — dense trash packs with real wipe potential, a boss roster north of a dozen named encounters, and a locked entrance you can’t simply walk through.

You need the Skeleton Key to open the entrance, and getting one is a multi zone undertaking. See our full Skeleton Key guide before you plan a run — a Rogue with high Lockpicking or an Engineer with the right explosive can bypass the door entirely if you’d rather skip the chain.

Darkmaster Gandling Final boss; teleports a player into a locked room mid-fight See Critical Mechanics — requires all six surrounding rooms cleared first

Critical Mechanics

Scholomance Occultists — never let two transform at once

At 30% health, these trash mobs turn into Dark Shades, becoming immune to physical damage and spamming a Shadowbolt Volley capable of wiping an unprepared group. Focus down one occultist at a time once it transforms, and never let two shades exist simultaneously. Casters need to be ready to finish these off — melee alone can’t do it once the transformation happens.

Kirtonos the Herald’s shapeshifting

He’s an optional boss, summoned using Blood of Innocents, looted from the Blood Steward of Kirtonos. Once summoned, he alternates between Human form, where he applies curses and can fear if left uninterrupted, and Gargoyle form, which adds a knockback and a stun. Tank him with your back against a wall to avoid being thrown off position, and reestablish threat immediately after each form change.

Jandice Barov’s illusions

Partway through the fight, she summons illusions of herself that also attack your group — and losing track of which one is real is a real problem. Mark her with an icon before the pull so your tank can reliably reacquire the actual boss once the illusions appear.

Darkmaster Gandling requires a full room clear first

He won’t spawn until all six surrounding rooms are cleared. During the fight itself, he periodically teleports a random party member into one of those now empty rooms, which stays locked until that player kills a handful of near zero-health skeletons spawned there. Whoever gets teleported should clear quickly and rejoin — the fight continues without them in the meantime.

Notable Loot

Boss Notable Drops
Darkmaster Gandling Headmaster’s Charge (a rare epic drop from the final boss)

Rattlegore Shadowcraft Boots, Viewing Room Key
Lord Alexei Barov Ancient Bone Bow

Quests

Scholomance carries a real quest list beyond just the Skeleton Key chain, spanning multiple NPCs across Western Plaguelands and connecting into several longer storylines. See our complete Scholomance Quests Guide for the full breakdown.

Tips & Tricks

Bring a caster capable of finishing off Occultist shades. Physical damage alone can’t close out that transformation, and getting caught without ranged magic damage in the group turns this trash into a real threat.

Mark bosses with illusions or adds before you pull, not after. Both Jandice Barov and Lord Alexei Barov punish groups that lose track of who’s actually the real target mid fight.

Clear methodically around Darkmaster Gandling’s room. Rushing toward him before all six surrounding rooms are cleared just means he won’t engage at all — there’s no way to skip this requirement.
