Overview
Let’s be honest up front: Runecraft is slow. The Wiki’s best solo method tops out around 100k XP/hour at high levels, most of the route sits well below that, and 99 is over 13 million XP. It’s the skill a lot of accounts leave until last, and nobody will blame you for that.
The good news is that most methods past the early levels make GP rather than cost it, and Guardians of the Rift turned the skill from pure running into a non-combat minigame with rewards worth chasing. The Abyss is the main place you put gear at risk, and you can avoid it entirely.
The usual plan is quests to skip the opening levels, Guardians of the Rift for the outfit and pouches, then either stay there or switch to Lava runes for XP or blood and soul runes for GP. Which one you pick depends on whether you want the fastest XP or a session that pays for itself.
Runecraft is click-heavy. Even the ‘chill’ methods involve constant running and banking, so stamina potions or another way to keep run energy up are part of every serious setup.
Getting Ready
A handful of quests and unlocks make the whole grind smoother. Grab these before you commit to a method.
- 1
- Rune Mysteries
No requirements, and the starting point for almost every Runecraft unlock.
- 2
- Enter the Abyss
Needs Rune Mysteries and gives 1,000 Runecraft XP. You also need it to repair essence pouches and to use the Abyss later.
- 3
- Temple of the Eye
Needs Enter the Abyss and 10 Runecraft. It gives 9,210 Runecraft XP across the quest, a medium pouch, and unlocks Guardians of the Rift.
- 4
- Quest skips
The Wiki route uses Client of Kourend, The Ascent of Arceuus, Enter the Abyss, Temple of the Eye, The Eyes of Glouphrie and The Slug Menace to get into the 30s. What Lies Below gives 8,000 XP once you’re 35.
- 5
- Lunar Diplomacy
Gives 5,000 Runecraft XP and the Lunar spellbook: Astral Contact (67 Magic), Ourania Teleport (71 Magic) and Magic Imbue (82 Magic), which matters for Lava runes.
- 6
- Essence pouches
Small (1), Medium (25), Large (50) and Giant (75) stack up to 30 extra essence. The Colossal pouch holds 40 on its own and is made with an abyssal needle from Guardians of the Rift, which needs 56 Crafting.
Leveling Route
Rates are the Wiki’s numbers for each method. The Lava and Ourania ranges climb as you unlock bigger pouches, so the low end is early-level play and the high end is late with a colossal pouch.
The Wiki says beginners at Lava runes can expect anywhere from 50-90% of its listed rates while learning the route. Don’t judge the method on your first hour.
Guardians of the Rift
Guardians of the Rift is where most accounts should spend their first big chunk of Runecraft. It’s a group minigame inside the Temple of the Eye, it needs 27 Runecraft and the quest, and it’s the only place to get the gear that makes every other method better.
- 1
- How it works
You mine guardian fragments, turn them into guardian essence, craft runes at the altars that open up, and feed guardian stones to the Great Guardian. Bring a pickaxe and a chisel.
- 2
- XP rates
The Wiki lists about 25k XP/hour at 40-50, 40k at 50-75, 50k at 75-85 and 65k-70k from 85 up in small, coordinated teams. Slower than Lava runes, but far more relaxed.
- 3
- Raiments of the Eye
Each piece gives 10% more runes and the full set gives 60% in total. It gives no extra XP, but it boosts the profit of every later method, including blood and soul runes.
- 4
- Abyssal needle and lantern
The needle costs 750 abyssal pearls and lets you make the Colossal pouch. The Abyssal lantern costs 1,500 and gives bonus runes.
- 5
- Profit
The Wiki’s money making page puts Guardians of the Rift around 1.1M GP/hour from the runes and rewards, so it pays you while you train.
Stay at Guardians of the Rift until you have the full Raiments of the Eye and a Colossal pouch. Everything after it is faster or more profitable with those two.
Lava Runes
Lava runes are the XP method. You take pure essence, earth runes and an earth talisman to the Fire Altar and craft combination runes for 10.5 XP each. Combinations fail half the time without help, so wear a binding necklace to make every craft succeed. With Magic Imbue at 82 Magic you can drop the talisman as well.
- 1
- Level 23
Lava runes unlock. With no pouches the Wiki lists about 43k XP/hour.
- 2
- Level 25-50
Medium and Large pouches, or an early Colossal pouch, push you into the 51k-66k XP/hour range.
- 3
- Level 75
With the Giant pouch or Colossal pouch it’s about 78k-80k XP/hour.
- 4
- Level 85-99
The full Colossal pouch takes you to around 100k-102k XP/hour. The Wiki notes a theoretical max of about 113k at 85 with perfect play.
- 5
- Cost
With the Raiments of the Eye it’s roughly break-even to slightly profitable. Without the outfit you lose a little GP per XP, which is another reason to finish Guardians of the Rift first.
Lava runes are tick-sensitive and click-intensive. If you can’t face that for long, Guardians of the Rift to 99 is a perfectly valid choice. It’s slower, but you’ll be far less burned out.
Money Making Methods
Runecraft is one of the few skills where the late game pays well. These are the methods the Wiki’s money making guides cover.
- 1
- Guardians of the Rift (27+)
Around 1.1M GP/hour per the Wiki, with the reward shop on top. Easy to fit into any session.
- 2
- Ourania Altar (any level)
Craft at the Ourania Altar using pure essence. At higher levels the Wiki expects about 350k-400k GP/hour depending on rune prices. Ourania Teleport (71 Magic, Lunar Diplomacy) makes it workable.
- 3
- Blood runes at Arceuus (77)
Mine dense essence, turn it into dark essence fragments and craft at the Blood Altar in Kourend. No quests needed. The Wiki lists just under 1M GP/hour and about 36k Runecraft XP, plus some Mining and Crafting.
- 4
- Blood runes at Meiyerditch (77)
Needs Sins of the Father. Pure essence runs with fairy rings or the Abyss. The Wiki lists roughly 3.3M GP/hour and about 48k XP/hour, but it’s a demanding route.
- 5
- Soul runes (90)
Mined and crafted through the Abyss, with Enter the Abyss required. The Wiki lists about 1.07M GP/hour and 49k XP/hour. The Abyss drains your Prayer and skulls you without an abyssal bracelet, so bring gear you can lose.
Tips & Tricks
Do the quest skips first. Every level you get from a quest is a level you don’t have to run for.
Use pure essence for everything. The Wiki points out it works for every rune type and is usually cheaper than rune essence.
Stamina potions are the best fix for run energy on long sessions, and a ring of endurance helps too.
Mix methods to avoid burnout. A few games of Guardians of the Rift between Lava sessions keeps the grind bearable.
Don’t buy essence runners unless you have the GP to burn. The Wiki puts them at around 12-15 million coins an hour and warns that the service can be tied to real-world trading, which risks a ban.
